（三）青銅兵器上鑄刻銘文的意義
在青銅兵器上鑄刻文字，根據筆者考察，一般來說它的意義有如下四點：
第一，明冶工之名。
如，《汝陰令戈》銘文：“卅三年。汝陰令、右工師、冶禽。”這裏出現汝陰令、右工師、冶禽三個人，說明督查、工師和冶煉工三方的工作職能及其個人名字。是兵器制作的管理體制完善的一個體現。
第二，明持有者之名。
如，《子嬰戈》銘文為：“子嬰之用戈。”表明了此戈的使用者為子嬰。而更多的場合，兵器鑄造完後統一上交，由專門機構驗收和保管，並刻上“武庫”二字。由此也可以看出持有人、保管人的經緯。特別是戰國時代，已經成為常態。
第三，說明制造工藝的精美。
如，《玄鏐戈》銘文為：“玄鏐旉呂之用。”表示制作原料的精美。
第四，明激勵之言。
如，春秋戰國的《武業劍》，銘文明顯分為兩部分，一部分是鑄劍人鑄劍時留下的銘文“郾王職作武業之鑄劍”，另一部分是上述銘文尾部出現的比較細而湹目毯邸盀楣ァ倍帧蔫T刻文字痕跡和分佈間距來看，“為攻”二字或為武業所刻。而前九字當為郾王命人鑄劍時所鑄。為攻者，用於進攻也。又如，《攻敔王光劍》，銘文最後是“自作用劍，以戕越人”。過去，學術界對此銘理解爭議很大，異釋頗多。現在，筆者提出上述新釋，關鍵是對“”字的釋讀。原拓中的“戕”字寫作“”。“以戕越人”就是希望這把劍可以殺越人，與之抗爭。
（四）、國内外青銅兵器及其銘文研究的歷史回顧
早在1881年，英國考古學家John Evans爵士出版了《The Ancient Bronze Implements, Weapons, and Ornaments：Of Great Britain and Ireland》一書。這是西方比較早的研究青銅兵器的著作。
二十世紀前期，1922年,美國Berthold Laufer出版了《Archaic Chinese Bronzes of the Shang Chou and Han Periodsin the Collection of Mr.Parish Watson》一書。勞弗爾本是德國人,曾多次來中國東北和西部地區進行實地考古調查活動。1924年,加拿大E.A.Voretsch出版了《Altchinesische Bronzes》一書。這是西方漢學界兩部介紹中國古代青銅器問題的概論性著作，內容都涉及到了兵器。1931年，日本原田淑人、駒井和愛編輯出版了《支那古器圖考（兵器篇）》一書。
二十世紀後期，1953年，日本岡崎敬發表了《鉞と矛について：殷商青銅利器に關する研究》―文。此文開始了戰後日本漢學界對商周兵器的考古學研究。1954年，日本梅原末治發表了《中國出土の一群の銅利器に就いて》一文。1957年，Nancy K. Sandars出版了關於法國的青銅兵器的著作《Bronze Age Cultures in France》一書。1965年，Marija Gimbutas出版了關於歐洲青銅兵器的著作《Bronze Age cultures in Central and Eastern Europe》一書。而對於中國青銅兵器的研究，1956年，Max Loehr和Werner Jannings聯合編撰了故宮博物院保存的楊甯史收藏關於中國早期青銅兵器的《Chinese bronze age weapons》一書，可以作為這一研究的先驅者。1965年，James Mellon Menzies出版了關於中國早期青銅兵器的著作《The Shang Ko: a study of the characteristic weapon of the Bronze Age in China during the period 1311-1039 B.C.》一書。1970年，日本天理大學編輯出版了《中國古代の兵器》一書。該書以青銅器和玉器的兵器造型為主。1972年，日本林巳奈夫出版了《中國殷周時代の武器》一書。
但是，這些著作絕大多數全是從考古類型學的角度，分析和研究中國青銅兵器的發展歷史。但是卻很少關注到兵器銘文的研究。而對中國青銅兵器考古類型學的研究取得極大成者是美國漢學家Max Loehr。
Max Loehr,1903～1988。德国人。1936年，他獲得慕尼克大學藝術史博士學位。1940年，他來到北京任中德學院院長、清華大學助理教授。1951年，他任密歇根大學教授。1960年開始，任哈佛大學藝術系教授。代表性著作有：《Early Chinese Jades：A Loan Exhibition Presented by the Museum of Art》、《Chinese Bronze Age Weapons：The Werner Jannings Collection in the Chinese National Palace Museum》、《Chinese landscape woodcuts：from an imperial commentary to the tenth-century printed edition of the Buddhist canon》.、《Ritual Vessels of Bronze Age China》等。代表性论文有：《The Earliest Chinese Swoeds and the Akinakes》、《Ordos Daggers and Knives： Part one：Daggers and Part two：Knives》、《The Bronze Styles of the Anyang Period (1300-1028 B.C.)》、《The Stag Image in Scythia and the Far East》、《A Landscape at tributed to Wen Cheng –Ming》、《The Question of Individualism in Chinese Art》、《Some Fundamenatl Issues in the History of Chinese Painting》、《The Fate of the Ornament in Chinese Art、Rt-Historical Art：One Aspect of Ch'ing Painting》、《The Mes and Variations：A Winter Landscape in the Freer Gallery and Related Versions》等。
Max Loehr利用紋樣的風格分析將河南安陽青銅器劃分為五個時期，並且在其後的考古發掘中得到印證，從而影響了現當代西方對中國古代青銅器的研究。他在1953年時曾提出的“青銅器風格的延續發展規律”問題。在具體技術問題上，他認為中國青銅器一般是先製作模型後澆注成型的，而後才是在范上才印出紋飾。雖然他並沒有研究銘文，但是，他對商周銅器的美術史研究，成為商周銘文研究的輔助，為西方漢學界的金文和青銅器的研究打開了新的局面，其歷史意義不容置疑。2008年，美國曾出版了Robert Bagley撰寫的專門研究Max Loehr的青銅器研究及其美學理論的專著《Max Loehr and the Study of Chinese Bronzes》一書。可供參考。
對兵器銘文的研究在國外學術界引起重視是始自日本學者江村治樹。
1980年，江村治樹發表了研究春秋戰國時代兵器銘文問題的著名論文《春秋戰國時代の銅戈?戟の編年と銘文》，此文是當時國內外學術界利用兵器銘文研究當時的國家制度、軍事制度和城市史、工藝製造技術等問題的先驅性著作。2008年，日本下田粘霭媪恕吨袊糯鷩窑涡纬嗓惹嚆~兵器》一書。該書以韓、趙、魏等國兵器的製造和銘文為核心，分析研究了兵器鋳造、監管制度及其相關的國家政權的權力構造等問題，從兵器學的角度研究了當時古代國家的形成原因。

兵器拓本或兵器圖像著錄的編篡和出版，對兵器銘文的研究起了很大的推進作用。
1962年，陳夢家編篡的《美帝國主義劫掠的我國殷周銅器集錄》一書被正式出版。1982年，臺灣邱德修主編的多卷本《商周金文集成》一書出版發行。1983年，臺灣嚴一萍所編多卷本《金文總集》一書出版，收錄金文8035號。1984年開始，中國社會科學院考古研究所編出多卷本《殷周金文集成》，至1994年出齊，收錄金文達11984號。1986年開始出版了由馬承源主編的多卷本《商周青銅器銘文選》一書。1990年，王輝出版了《秦銅器銘文編年匯釋》一書。1993年，《臺灣龔欽龍藏越王劍暨商周青銅兵器》一書在國內出版。2007年，中國社會科學院考古研究所編篡出版了多卷本《殷周金文集成 (修訂增補本)》 一書，第七、八兩冊全部是兵器銘文拓片和釋文。
但是，上述各書目前以2012年出版的吳鎮烽編著多卷本《商周青銅器銘文暨圖像集成》一書為集大成。該書以三十五卷的巨型篇幅，將圖型、拓本、釋文、出土、收藏、尺寸等諸多要素集於一身，共收有銘商周銅器16704器。是目前最完整、最具有考古學和文獻學雙重學術價值的商周金文研究的必備工具書。其中，兵器內容有戈、戟（編號16001—17364）、矛、殳（編號17501—17704）、劍、鈹（編號17801—18078）、鉞、戚（編號18201—18250）、刀、削（編號18301—18325）、矢鏃（編號18351—18420）、雜兵（編號18461—18594）等。
最近二十年來，大陸和臺灣出版的對於中國青銅兵器的研究著作，可以分為考古學的研究和古文字學的研究兩類。
對青銅兵器的考古學的研究，如：
1993年，王振華編著的《古越閣藏商周青銅兵器》一書正式出版。1995年，陳芳妹編著的《故宮青銅兵器圖錄》一書正式出版。1996年，黃意明、徐錚編著的《古兵器》一書正式出版。2003年，徐湖平與南京博物院編著的《臺灣龔欽龍藏越王劍暨商周青銅兵器》一書正式出版。該書分上下兩篇。上篇收錄了九篇龔欽龍藏越王劍暨商周青銅兵器研究論文;下篇收錄了三十八件龔欽龍藏越王劍暨商周青銅兵器精品。2007年，吳國瑛編著的《三代青銅兵器知識三十講》一書正式出版。該書介紹了我國古代兵器的起源、青銅兵器在戰爭中的作用，以及夏、商青銅戈的演變過程等。2009年，朱丹編著的《青銅兵器》一書正式出版。該書分為青銅兵器概論、青銅兵器圖譜及青銅兵器論文三部分。2011年，井中偉的《早期中國青銅戈·戟研究》一書正式出版。2013年，朱丹、朱明聯合編著的《青銅兵器》一書正式出版。2014年，郭妍利的《商代青銅兵器研究》一書正式出版。
對青銅兵器的古文字學的研究，如：
1974年，李學勤出版了《戰國題銘概述》一書，開始了對戰國兵器銘文的研究。1987年，臺灣林清源出版了《兩周靑銅句兵銘文匯考》。開始了對周代兵器銘文的研究。1993年，臺灣王振華等編篡出版了《商周青銅兵器暨夫差劍特展論文集》一書。這是海峽兩岸第一部研究青銅兵器銘文的論文集。
而最近幾十年來發表的研究青銅兵器銘文的論文則多達百篇。這些成果極大地推進了對商周時期青銅兵器銘文中體現出的文字、歷史、禮制、軍事和國家行政管理的研究。
其中，黃盛璋、黃錫全、王輝、郝本性、李朝遠等人研究青銅兵器文字的論文成就突出。
如黃盛璋的《試論三晉兵器的國別和年代及相關問題》、《燕、齊兵器研究》、《秦兵器分國、斷代與有關制度研究》對這一領域的發展貢獻卓著。如黃錫全的《襄樊團山墓地出土一件蔡公子加戈》、《介紹新見秦政嗣白喪戈矛》、《“夫鋁”戈銘新考》、《新見宜陽銅戈考論》、《介紹一件晉陽令銅戈》、《介紹一件韓廿年塚子戈》、《介紹一件新見銅戈》、《介紹一件新見平阿造戈》等。如李朝遠的《新見者兒戈考》、《汝陰令戈小考》、《戰國郾王戈辨析二題》等，皆是最近幾十年來青銅兵器銘文研究領域的名作。
黃盛璋在《試論三晉兵器的國別和年代及其相關問題》一文中一針見血地指出：
所以兵器的地位僅次於禮器(彝器)；出土兵器也相當多,在青銅器中兵器是一個重要的組成部分。可是青銅兵器的研究卻遠遠落後於禮器，有些青銅器的專著甚至不包括兵器；作為最基本的研究——分國與斷代工作，也還相當缺乏基礎。
他的這一分析十分準確並切中要害，這番話至今依然具有指導意義。進而他提出如下結論：“從春秋進入戰國，是歷史上一個轉變時期，在兵器製造上也是這樣，其中以三晉變革最先。長期執牛耳居霸主地位的晉國，後來雖然由於分裂為三，國力分化，政治上不能維持其霸主地位，但在經濟上仍然比較先進，特別是冶鑄業較為發達，不僅韓國當時以鑄造兵器著名，即趙、魏兩國國都同樣也是冶鑄業的中心，這從《史記·貨殖列傳》中還可證實這一點。在戰國兵器中，三晉兵器銘刻所記鑄造地名最多，職官名目也最多，說明三晉兵器鑄造業的發達和管理制度的詳備。看來這種制度的改革和兵器銘刻格式的改創大約都是由三晉開創和領先的。”
