以前的多個關於“名校諾貝爾獎數”的版本多有謬誤，特別是最初的一個。後來有人不斷做出改進，但是全是“網友意見”，沒有一個是權威的。最大的毛病是標準不一，有的學校採用的標準是畢業生、教授、曾經工作過什麼都算，有的學校只有教授獲獎的數據。有鑑於此，瑞典皇家學院諾貝爾委員會日前公布了唯一權威的世界各大學獲諾貝爾獎數目，採用的是最有說服力的“得獎者當時工作單位”的標準。因為這個標準最能夠說明大學當時的研究水平，並且可以避免“什麼都算”帶來的混淆、不公平和不合理。
根據此權威數據列表，獲得10或更多次諾貝爾獎的大學共計9所，其中劍橋大學是唯一一所美國之外的。列表如下：

8 哥倫比亞大學： 12

在這九所之下最領先的大概是牛津大學，但其上一次得獎還是在1972年。在3-9名諾貝爾獎之間，歐洲的著名大學足以和美國的名校分庭抗禮，而日本的東京、京都大學以此嚴格標準未能入選。美國獲3次及以上諾貝爾獎的大學還有(按英文字母排列)：康奈爾大學(Cornell)，洛克非勒醫學研究所(Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research,Princeton)，洛克非勒大學(Rockefeller University, New York)，賓夕法尼亞大學(U Penn),西雅圖華盛頓大學(U Washington)，聖路易斯華盛頓大學(Washington U)，耶魯大學。
