Let us make a comparison on two places:
San Jose, California and Winsor, Ontario, Canada

1. San Jose, California
Suppose a family income US$120,000/year
After income tax: US$80,000,
A brand new house costs about US$800,000.
2. Winsor, Canada
a brand new house of the same size and quality costs about CAN$250,000

net income:house cost
=US$80,000:US$800,000
=Can$x:CAN$250,000

=>net income of Winsor family=CAN$25,000
=>gross income winsor family =CAN$37,000

which means for a people living in Winsor, the family only needs to make CAN$37,000/year to have the same quality of residence as a family living in silicon valley that makes US$120,000/year.

Let's include some other facts mentioned earlier.
The price for a car is cheaper in USA than Canada.
The price for car insurance can be 2-3 times higher in big cities than small cities.
Medical insurance is much cheaper in Canada.
When travel internationally, people who makes US dollars obviousely has advantages.
