索尼A55所採用的半透鏡反光鏡設計，不僅僅可以折射光線，還能同時讓傳感器感光。相機將AF對焦感應區域移到了相機機頂部位，全新的設計允許光線直接傳達到圖像傳感器和自動對焦系統，免除了在拍攝時移動反光鏡需要，大為改善了相機在跟蹤對焦、LV實時對焦和視頻短片拍攝時的自動對焦能力。
索尼於24日公布的兩款A33和A55半透鏡數碼單反相機則向這個目標發起了挑戰，其中索尼A55單反擁有10fps的高速對焦連拍功能，數碼單反的革新之作。
