索尼A55所采用的半透镜反光镜设计，不仅仅可以折射光线，还能同时让传感器感光。相机将AF对焦感应区域移到了相机机顶部位，全新的设计允许光线直接传达到图像传感器和自动对焦系统，免除了在拍摄时移动反光镜需要，大为改善了相机在跟踪对焦、LV实时对焦和视频短片拍摄时的自动对焦能力。
索尼于24日公布的两款A33和A55半透镜数码单反相机则向这个目标发起了挑战，其中索尼A55单反拥有10fps的高速对焦连拍功能，数码单反的革新之作。
