East wind: Perspectives from the west and the east

China is at the east coast of the Eurasian continent. East wind from the ocean is warm and moist. Britain, as well as the whole Europe, is at the west coast of the continent. East wind from the inland is cold and dry. The feeling toward east wind can be very different for people at different places. There's an east wind coming all the same, such a wind as never blew on England yet. It will be cold and bitter ... and a good many of us may wither before its blast. But it's God's own wind none the less, and a cleaner, better, stronger land will lie in the sunshine when the storm has cleared.

By east wind,  here Sherlock Holmes meant not China, but Germany, which lies at the east of Britain.

Historically, Britain, at the west edge of the continent, has been repeatedly invaded from the east. From the Romans, Anglo-Saxons, to Norman conquest. In other words, British themselves are mostly from the east. East wind always blows on England.
