《總統是靠不住的》是旅美作家林達發表於2004年“近距離看美國”系列叢書之二的書名。這幾年每天在我們眼皮底下發生的事情足以證實林達的觀察是正確的。不過這幾天，圍繞美國總統生病住院，人們有理由相信總統的醫生也是靠不住的。他表現得像特朗普的競選經理，不僅不向民眾提供總統中招的時間表及吃了“武毒”後的健康狀況，連星期五晚上進醫院前特朗普的體溫、是否使用氧氣也不告訴公眾，只宣布“he is doing well”。

“美國民眾每天都面對來自總統、他的發言人及其他政府官員的謊言。 ...事實是，總統很少——幾乎從來不會告訴民眾關於他們在做什麼，他們相信什麼以及為什麼這樣做的真實原因。他們總是尋找怎樣在政治上更為有效、更加方便的途徑和方式將國家事務公布於眾（或者不公布於眾）而不在乎真相究竟如何。”（The public is lied to every day by the President, by his spokespeople, by his officers.....The fact is Presidents rarely say the whole truth—essentially, never say the whole truth—of what they expect and what they're doing and what they believe and why they're doing it and rarely refrain from lying, actually, about these matters......it's simply more convenient or more politically effective they feel for them to present matters to the public in a way that not to be correspond to the reality.）
