《总统是靠不住的》是旅美作家林达发表于2004年“近距离看美国”系列丛书之二的书名。这几年每天在我们眼皮底下发生的事情足以证实林达的观察是正确的。不过这几天，围绕美国总统生病住院，人们有理由相信总统的医生也是靠不住的。他表现得像特朗普的竞选经理，不仅不向民众提供总统中招的时间表及吃了“武毒”后的健康状况，连星期五晚上进医院前特朗普的体温、是否使用氧气也不告诉公众，只宣布“he is doing well”。

“美国民众每天都面对来自总统、他的发言人及其他政府官员的谎言。 ...事实是，总统很少——几乎从来不会告诉民众关于他们在做什么，他们相信什么以及为什么这样做的真实原因。他们总是寻找怎样在政治上更为有效、更加方便的途径和方式将国家事务公布于众（或者不公布于众）而不在乎真相究竟如何。”（The public is lied to every day by the President, by his spokespeople, by his officers.....The fact is Presidents rarely say the whole truth—essentially, never say the whole truth—of what they expect and what they're doing and what they believe and why they're doing it and rarely refrain from lying, actually, about these matters......it's simply more convenient or more politically effective they feel for them to present matters to the public in a way that not to be correspond to the reality.）
