Ye Cheng: Scientific Contribution Summary

Ye Cheng’s primary contribution to turbulence closure research lies in extending the Renormalization Group (RG) framework from fundamental turbulence theory to practical parameterizations used in geophysical fluid systems. Although not the originator of RG turbulence theory, he is among the first to systematically apply RG‑derived turbulence time scales to second‑order closure models for both the atmospheric boundary layer and the oceanic mixed layer. Through long‑term collaboration with V.M. Canuto and others, Cheng helped establish a physically consistent unified turbulence closure system capable of representing both stable and unstable stratification. His work resolved several structural deficiencies in traditional Mellor–Yamada‑type models—such as the critical Richardson number and pressure–correlation closures—and enabled the deployment of this improved framework in NASA GISS ModelE and related climate modeling systems. Notably, Cheng has published 27 papers in top‑tier journals across atmospheric science, oceanography, and Earth system modeling. His contributions hold foundational significance in the development of turbulence parameterizations for Earth system models.
