Dear Editor:
I am the producer of the video "The Cross: Jesus in China" mentioned in your article. I would like to clarify some of the things in you report and make some statements regarding this video.
1. I just came back from China. There is no such thing as "arresting 50 or more people" recently because of the video "The Cross:Jesus in China". It is strictly a rumor spreaded by government-related personnels to imtimidate Chinese Christians. There might have some Christians being arrested recently some places, not the 50 or more as mentioned in your article. There are a lot of other rumors floating around China. As a prominent Christian magazine, you should double check your source before you put it into print.
2. The arrest of Deborah Xu and the other two brothers has nothing to do with the video. We do not interview her; nor do we interview the other two brothers. Deborah Xu has been on government watch list for a long time. Nobody should be surprise that she is arrested. It is strictly a coincident that she was arrested after the video is released.
3. Your "source based in Hong Kong" is probably as good as many in the rumor mill who can provide you with "rumor" and just the rumor. You should also double check their source(s) before you put them in print. This is a tactics used bt the Bureau of Reglion to spread fears among oversea Chinese Christians so that they will not try to help fellow Christians in China. Please do not be their tool; willingly or unwillingly.
4. Before you do an editorial review of this video and/or the book, it is irresponsible to print the statement like "crackdown will focus on the people mentioned in the video and the book". It will give people the impression that their arrests, if there is any, is the faults of this video and/or the book. People should first watch this video and/or the book.
5. I will acknowledge that our video "The Cross: Jesus in China" causes such an impact in China that we, the director and the producers, do not anticipate before hand. Every Chinese Christians I met in China will tell me testimonies of some of their unbelieved friends become Christian after watching this video. It is the Holy Spirit who uses this video to do these miracles. We would like to see the Holy Spirit to continuously use this video to reach 1.3 billion Chinese. China Soul for Christ Foundation will make every effort to help achieving this goal.
In Christ

Dear brother
Since there are reports that believers are being arrested because of the impact of the video series, “The Cross – Jesus in China”; there has been questions and criticisms suggesting that maybe the series is released prematurely. As someone who has lived and worked for the sake of advancing the Kingdom of God in China over the past 24 years, I will say that this video series is very timely. Here are my reasons:
1. This series does not exalt or promote a particular organization, method or strategy. It also does not expose or reveal any organization, method or means. This series can be properly called, “The Acts of the Holy Spirit in China”. It is full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, repentance, forgiveness, and longsuffering – all the characteristics of the fruit of the Holy Spirit. It shows a diverse group of people who are transformed and empowered by God -- ordinary people who have become extraordinary because of a LIVING GOD. In the video you will see and hear unwanted orphans and street kids, a girl who was imprisoned for sharing her faith only days before her wedding, actress, writers, peasants, former party members, businessmen, etc. share about the love of God and their commitment to follow Him in spite of sufferings. You will hear a blind boy sing of opening the eyes of the world to the love of God, wishing that he could walk around the world in one night to do so. The girl who was imprisoned for three years, along with many who were jailed for few years to 20 over years, all speak of their imprisonment with a smile on their faces. They shared their sufferings as they really were, not with bitterness towards anyone. They are not waving their fists in protest, instead they have expressed forgiveness towards those who have persecuted them. This is the living version of the Book of Acts. It glorifies God alone.
2. In this series, the believers are simply testifying of the power and love of God. Most of them will want to witness for Christ under any circumstances. The persecutions which may be a result of this combined and powerful witness should not surprise us. Afterall, persecutions will come as long as the Kingdom is advancing forcefully. In other words, as long as there is growth in the Church, Chinese believers will suffer to some degree. But Chinese believers live and know that persecutions cannot hurt the Church. The Chinese Church has grown 100 times in the midst of severe persecutions.
3. The Lord is using this series to win many more souls. More significantly, it is reviving the Church in China and worldwide. Many of us are aware that the revival of the Chinese Church in the last few decades has happened mostly in the rural areas. This series is arousing the interest of many urban folks, causing them to consider Christ as never before. Revival is coming to the urban centers of China. This is a new epoch, for which SARS was the historical marker! Moreover, Christians who have viewed this series are challenged to reconsider their personal walk with God. They are asking, “Is my faith as real and as dynamic?” Those who have not counted the cost of following Christ and of carrying the Cross are made aware through this video series. Many are making the obvious and right decision to pursue a more intimate relationship with God.
4. Silence does not help the victims, only the victimizers. If we are afraid of embarrassing the authorities because of what they have done, we are not supporting our Chinese brothers and sisters. This series has presented the facts in just the right touch. It is not designed to affront or to embarrass. But the truth can do just that. If so, it is obvious who should change. Certainly it should not be the responsibility of the victims to keep quiet. Some suggested that maybe a latter date would be more appropriate for the release of this video series. If so, how long? These are the last of the living testimonies of those who have suffered 20 more years in jail. They have already waited more than 20 years since their release to tell their experiences. Hundreds more are no longer alive to share their stories. When this season is over, these stories will be less relevant.
5. The authorities are already reacting. It will not help to stop selling or promoting this video series now. The reverse is actually better for our Chinese brothers and sisters. If more people are aware of their plight, the authorities will have to be civil in how they treat them.
For those of us who are concerned, the best thing to do is to pray for the Church in China. We need to pray that:
a. God will continue to use this video series for His glory, leading many souls to Christ and leading many Christians to actually take up their Cross to follow Him.
b. Our Chinese brothers and sisters will continue to receive the persecutions with grace. Most of them are concerned for their children and the ministry. Pray for divine protection for them and their children.
c. The authorities will finally understand that persecuting Christians is fighting against God.
Warmly in Christ.
