一个人对科学领会得越深,对宗教就越不可能相信?

(1) 这是因为科学在本质上与宗教是格格不入的,因为探索精神、怀疑精神、实
证精神和理性精神是科学精神不可分割的组成部分,而宗教所要求的是不可质疑、
非理性的信仰。一个人对科学领会得越深,对宗教就越不可能相信。

Apparently the author has much to learn about the correct relationship between science and faith. Science in the lens of atheistic view will never help us to truly understand the cosmos as deeply and completely as the Christian theistic view. I suggest that anyone interested in this subject pick up relevant books written by Dr. John Polkinghorne (a physicist and Templeton prize-winning theologian) and many others. All truths must be God's truth. Any enduring truth in the natural/materialistic arena as uncovered by science will appropriately find its place in the treasure trove of God's truth, even if we cannot mesh them in apparent harmony at the time being.

I find people who are violently atheistic the most unscientific in their blindness to the limitations of science and unreasonable refusal to be open-minded about the possibility of supernatural revelation. They do not have a true understanding about the power and limitation of science. There are three fundamental limitations of science.

First, science has to resort to materialistic means to probe the material universe. Such probing comes with a price per the Uncertainty Principle, giving us a fuzzy quantum picture of our cosmos. Besides, science is powerless in any supernatural arena. An ordinary folk's guess can be just as good (or bad) as any great scientist's on non-science subjects.

Second, science has to resort to logical discourse to analyze and reason. But such rationality is deeply rooted in faith, at least the faith in logic, not to mention the many presuppositions that must be present in any logical discourse. Godel's incompleteness theorem smashes the self-righteousness attitude of many ignorant scientists about their logical discourse. One cannot prove his points without either assuming the correctness of the presuppositions inherent in the discourse or resorting to an outside system for proof, which begs for another proof from without, and again for yet another, the cycle of proof goes on and on.

Third, science cannot tell us the ultimate reason for the existence of cosmos and humanity. In other words, science is quiet about our ultimate concern.

The more one knows the mystery of the cosmos, the more he ought to know the powerlessness of science in answering our spiritual questions such as the true ultimate reason for the existence of the cosmos and mankind. Ask, for example, Prof. Brian Green who recently authored a national bestseller entitled "The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality". The greatest scientists are clueless about the deepest mystery of the cosmos! They will remain so as long as they reject supernational revelations.

In fact, it is precisely due to our finite and limited predictive power in cosmic affairs that the Almighty God is amply able to demonstrate the vindicating power, beyond any shadow of doubt, to prove that he alone is the author and finisher who knows the past, present and future of our cosmos.

(2) 在当代著名生物学家中,我知道的唯一一个笃信宗教的例子,是人类基因组计划
的负责人弗兰西斯·柯林斯。在涉及科学家信仰问题的报道中,经常提到他做为
科学家信教的典型,可见其“珍稀”。沃森为之感到难堪的人当中,大概就包括
柯林斯。

That is the author's ignorance. Our ignorance should never enter into our conclusion that demands a better knowledge. See de Duve and Lederberg's remarks below when interviewed by Science staff in 1997. Years ago I also learned about a Maryland biologist who is a Nobel laureate and a preaching elder in his church.

(1) Albert Einstein (1879-1955, 1921 Nobel Laureate, One of a Kind Physicist, Time Magazine's Scientist of the 20th Century):

The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is at all comprehensible.
世界最不可思议的事乃是它根本就是可以思议的。

Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.

The scientist is possessed by the sense of universal causation ... 科学家为普适性的因果关系而感悟得痴迷。。。他的宗教情怀表现在对自然律和谐一致的欣喜若狂,自然律揭示出一个如此卓越的智慧,人类所有的系统思维与行动与之相比根本就是无关紧要的投射而已。

(2)Stephen Hawking (1942-present, Physicist, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambrige University):

The laws of science, as we know them at present, contain many fundamental numbers, like the size of the electric charge of the electron and ratio of the masses of the proton and the electron....The remarkable fact is that the values of these numbers seem to have been very finely adjusted to make possible the development of life.
我们所知道的科学定律包含许多基本常数,就如电子的电荷大小,质子与电子的质量比值,等等。值得留意的事实乃是,这些常数似乎是经过极其精密的调整,方可为生命催生。

(3) Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001, World-Renowned Astronomer, Plumian Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge University ):

A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a superintellect has monkeyed with physics, as well as chemistry and biology, and that there are no blind forces worth speaking about in nature. The numbers one calculates from the facts seem to me so overwhelming as to put this conclusion almost beyond question.

(4) John O'Keefe (Astronomer at NASA):

We are, by astronomical standards, a pampered, cosseted, cherished group of creatures... If the Universe had not been made the most exacting precision we could never have come into existence. It is my view that these circumstances indicate that the Universe was created for man to live in.

For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.
对一个终生信靠理性力量的科学家来说,这个故事象恶梦一般完结。他业已攀沿无知之山;他即将征服最高山峰;当他翻越最后一块山石,却遇见一帮已经在那里坐候数世纪的神学家。

(6) Paul Davies (Professor of Natural Philosophy at Australian Centre for Astrobiology at Macquarie University, Prolific author, among his better-known works are God and the New Physics, The Cosmic Blueprint, The Mind of God, The Last Three Minutes, About Time and Are We Alone? How to Build a Time Machine):

Roger Penrose has computed the odds against the observed universe appearing by accident to be 10^(10^30) to one.

(7) Freeman Dyson (Physicist and Mathematician at Harvard University, President of Space Studies Institute):

The more I examine the universe and the details of its architecture, the more evidence I find that the universe in some sense must have known we were coming.

(8) Lawrence M. Krauss & Glenn D. Starkman (Both Physicists at Case Western Reserve University):

Billions of years ago the universe was too hot for life to exist. Countless eons hence, it will become so cold and empty that life, no matter how ingenious, will perish.

(9) Francis Collins (Geneticist, Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute at the National Institutes of Health):

When something new is revealed about the human genome, I experience a feeling of awe at the realization that now humanity knows something only God knew before. It is a deeply moving sensation that helps me appreciate the spiritual side of life, and also makes the practice of science more rewarding. A lot of scientist really don't know what they are missing by not exploring their spiritual feeling. (quoted as saying in Science, vol. 277, p.890, Aug.15 1997)
每当人类基因组有新发现时,我体会一种敬畏的感受,觉悟到人类如今明白了从前只有上帝知道的事。这是一种感人至深的情怀,它帮助我欣赏生命的属灵层面,也使得从事科学收益更丰。好多的科学家不去发掘他们属灵的感受,他们真不知所失为何。

(10) Christian de Duve (Molecular Biologist, 1974 Nobel Laureate):

Many of my scientist friends are violently atheist, but there is no sense in which atheism is enforced or established by science. Disbelief is just one of many possible personal views. (quoted as saying in Science, vol. 277, p.890, Aug.15 1997)
我的许多科学家朋友是极端无神论者,但其实科学既不要求也不确立无神论。采取不信不过是许多个人观点里的一种。

(11) Joshua Lederberg (Evolutionary Biologist at Rockefeller University, 1958 Nobel Laureate):

Nothing so far disproves the divine. What is incontrovertible is that a religious impulse guides our motive in sustaining scientific inquiry. Beyond that it is all speculation. (quoted as saying in Science, vol. 277, p.890, Aug.15 1997)
迄今没有任何事否认上帝。无可争议的是,宗教热诚引导我们去持续探索科学的动机。除此之外,尽属推测。

(12) Charles Townes (Laser Inventor, 1964 Nobel Laureate, f0rmer provost of MIT):

Science wants to know the mechanism of the universe, religion the meaning. The two cannot be separated. (quoted as saying in Science, vol. 277, p.890, Aug.15 1997)
科学试图了解宇宙的机理,宗教则阐明其意义。二者不可分裂开来。
