There is a primitive side of human nature which is more or less related to violence, sex and thrill of power. Are these primitive desires already there when God created Adam, or do they come into being after Adam and Eve have sinned? Evolutionists would say that these primitive desires are the traces of men's evolution from animals, what would Christian say about them? We know that God sometimes uses violence to show his justice. Does this mean that our God is a violent God sometimes? History seemd to show us that the human beings used to be much more violent than they are today. Read the old testment and we can find the old Isaralites, including King David and King Soloman, engaged in lots of violent behaviors such as killing of brothers. These actions were considered normal behavior at that time, but unacceptable nowadays. Then my question is: is it true that human beings are morally better today than 5000 years ago or are they worse? If human beings are morally better than 5000 years ago, then we can say that the human history is a history of progress and improvement and we may even be morally better and better in the future, then why God will end the world some day? The book of Genesis seems to imply that after Adam and Eve have sinned things began to deteriorate and as a result people's life span also becomes less and less. But is this in line with the above conclusion that nowdays people's moral standard seems to be higher than that of the time of David and Soloman? The infamous Marquis de Sade used to say that pleasure can't exist without squashing the weak, and sex, even above money, is the ultimate fantasy thrill of power. Are his comments total nonsense, or they have some points? I myself always have a problem with Christian brothes and sisters: They seem to be very calm, very peaceful, very restrained people. But people are born different. I can feel that i am somewhat wild or even violent at heart, i'm more passionate, more emotional, and also more sensualist with much stronger sexual desire. Have brothers and sisters read the novel "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte? "i'm Heathcliff!" Now i'm single and brothers and sisters always say something like, "Forget about sex now. Try to pay your attention to something else. Live a happy, peaceful and restrained life." But i always wonder: is that healthy for me? I love sex so much, i have such a strong desire for it, but because of my faith in Christianity, i live a totally celebate life, is that healthy for me? This conflict is almost tearing me apart. I think that as far as primitive desires are concerned, total self-restraint is not in accord with human nature. i think certain release is also necessary, although restraint is definitely indispensable. Any professional in psychology who can give some opinions on this topic? |
