一肩長發，滿眼清醇地在小酒吧淺吟低唱城市民謠。國王和士兵，暗戀着樓上男人的女孩，凝望着窗外的晚餐。Susanne Vega象是點出了紐約清新而茫然的一刻，她的情緒總是那麼清澈，最多起一層霧，嗓音也總是那麼淡淡的，有一點麗，象一抹煙翠。
她的音樂是順耳順心，一路流淌下來。八年前初聽到Tom's Dinner，也叫我淡淡地吃了一驚，從此不能忘記這個名字。昨天買了她的一張專集， Tried and True,配器加了些電子味，然而如一條小溪，還是八年前一樣流着，可是對一個誠實的歌者來說，還有什麼是必需的呢？Susanne， 通常是歌里被吟唱着的那個鄰家女孩芳名。

如果說Susanne Vega是紐約的清晨，Sheryl Crow可能是紐約的黃昏至午夜。她的歌有滄桑和諷刺，但依然保有叛逃的精力，反抗的衝動。旋律又有力又美，每次聽她的RRUN，BABY RUN，都恨不得發足狂奔，無邊際地跑下去，阿甘式地跑下去。

黑人歌手的印象總是一張大嘴巴，Tracy Trampman帶着鼻音的哼唱告訴我在炫技，貧民文化的RAP，煽情的爵士之外底層人生的故事。她的歌是特別堅實的，一首《我有輛快車》，我搞了輛快車，我們逃走吧，我的父親在喝酒，他什麼也不做，我們會有新的生活；我有輛快車，我找到了工作，可是你在喝酒，你什麼也不做；我有輛快車，我升職了，你總在喝酒，我總有忍不下去的那天，我要走了，去新的生活。
感覺和那個《紫色》很象，都關心着貧民黑人女性的命運，人們把她們總結為弱勢群體，人類的苦難很大程度由她們來體現，這方面的同情和關注永遠不會供過於求。

有的時候一回頭，或者做一個簡單的動作，或者聞到一股氣味，我會感覺到自己猛然間被拽到過去的某個時刻，還不等細細品味，已經回來了……於是悵悵然若有所失……我想，我們喜歡老歌就是這個原因吧……

已經忘了是什麼時候……ArmStrong忽然告訴我有一首歌一定要聽。就是這個“湯姆的餐廳”……這個英國的女歌手Susana是一個不折不扣的詩人。我很少聽女歌手的歌，她是例外。這種隔世已遠的微妙感覺被她輕描淡寫地唱了出來，淡然，寂寥，無悔……
這首歌我這裡有兩個版本，其中一個是純粹的清唱……
