1789 1825 1830 1834 1840 1866 1868 1870 1880 1890 1899 ********************************** THE GANGS OF NEW YORK, written by Herbert Asbury, is being used as the basis for a gangster movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. The movie was filmed in Rome and is scheduled for release on December 20, 2002. Gangs covers a period of New York City's history, from the 1840's through to the bloody Draft Riots of 1863, when graft and corruption permeated every level of government including the police department. The ???? deviates from the historical timeline in many instances. An example is Monk Eastman, who did not exist until well after the demise of the Dead Rabbits gang, the Native Americans, and Bill "The Butcher". Monk was born in 1873 and reigned as "King" of the gangsters in the late 1890's and early 1900's. When World War I erupted, Monk enlisted in an infantry under the name of William Delaney and served with bravery on the front lines throughout the war. BACKGROUND ON GANGSTERS: The early gangs of New York City originated in the Five Points, the Bowery and the Paradise Square sections of Manhattan Island. Poor immigrants arrived without any resources or means of employment and settled into decrepit tenements. Families were lucky to have one room to themselves and buildings such as the Old Brewery, Jacob's Ladder, Gates of Hell, and Cow Bay were visions of the most abject filth, vice and human misery. Resorting to crime and prostitution was frequently the only way to exist. The setting was ripe for organized gangs and corrupt politicians. The green-grocery speak-easies which sprang up around Paradise Square provided meeting places for the gangs. Many of the green-grocers, gambling houses, places of prostitution, and the saloons and dance houses were owned by political leaders who utilized the "special" talents of the gangs. The lines between gangs and political parties were very blurred. William Poole, Bill The Butcher, was a member of the Native Americans and at the same time was cheftain of his own gang. On election day, Bill and his thugs would be stationed at the polling place in order to commandeer votes for the Native Americans. Their methods were violent and they frequently used "repeaters", people who voted more than once. Bill was a butcher by trade and was known for his skill with knives, accurately reaching targets from 20 feet. The Five Point gangs, consisting mainly of the Chichesters, Roach Guards, Plug Uglies, Shirt Tails, and Dead Rabbits, owed their allegiance to the political leaders of Tammany Hall. The Dead Rabbits were the largest and most powerful of the Five Point gangs. Their battle uniform was a red strip and the chief slugger carried a dead rabbit impaled on a pike. The Bowery gangs were controlled by the political leaders of the Native Americans and consisted of the Bowery Boys (largest and most important), the True Blue Americans, the American Guards, the O'Connell Guards, and the Atlantic Guards.
