I kinda feel that it was originally adopted because more often than not it is very difficult for the prosecution to find out who actually pulled the trigger if there were two or more people involved. As much as we care about fairness and human rights in this country, many provisions in criminal laws probably are just doing the opposite to convicts. After all, who cares about those convicts?
