Another unusual auction that needs some explanation. South's 1N was 11-14. My
double shows a penalty (Cappelletti). Our method after that is to play system
on. That is, pd responds, if he needs to, as if I opened a strong NT. However,
Fred forgot that and bid 2S, which in our method was transfer to C. I had a
lapse too, and explained that was transfer to 3D. When North's double came, I
realized it was transfer to C, and since I didn't have tolerance in D I tried
to bid my suit up in case we could find something to play on 3 level. When
Fred corrected to 3S, no one had anything to say.
3S had the obvious 5 tricks to lose and went a quiet 1 off. Which appeared to
be an ok result as oppo's cold for 2N.
The director was summoned and they would take time to study the situation. A
decision will be made later and notify us at the end of the game. For the time
being, we wrote -100 on our score card.

Fred got to play 3N after 1D-1S-2N-3C-3N. North led the DJ against that and
Fred let it ride to his A. He played a D back and collected the good news.
Next he unblocked D and ran the C to North's CJ, when the HK came back to HA,
Fred found himself in jeopardy if finessing C again. He rejected the finesse
and won the A, and cashed the D for 11th trick. That was +660 and avoided a
disaster for 28/51.
Fred's line was inferior. After learning the good news in D, the correct play
is to unblock D, play a S to A and cash a 4th D, pitching a H in dummy. Then
play another S back. When that suit is running, N is caught in an automatic
squeeze. In the 4 card ending you are left with HJ CAQ9 vs HA4 CT7. North must
either keep HKQ CKJ or HK CKJx. Either way you can end play him to lead
towards your C tenance for a great +690.
