Dallas – May 13, 2008 – The Association of Chinese Professionals Foundation-DFW (ACP) and US-China Chamber of Commerce of Dallas (USCCC), announced today to immediately establish a disaster relief fund to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims and their families of the giant earthquake that struck Sichuan province in southwest China on May 13, 2008, China time. The effort is aimed at consolidating financial assistance provided by individuals and businesses in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, and to ensure that such funds will be channeled to the appropriate organizations in the affected area, and can be applied effectively to help those in need. This special earthquake relief fund will target both the Chinese community, which is estimated to be about 100,000 in the Dallas-Forth Worth Metroplex, and beyond. At the time of this press release, the quake, 7.8 on the Richter scale, has claimed close to 12,000 lives, with many more still missing or injured. According to Dr. Jun Ren, ACP’s newly elected President, Chinese community organizations will join forces through such pan-community initiatives to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected, especially school children. Reports indicate that at least eight schools have been destroyed by the earthquake. “We hope, through our best efforts, to raise funds from the local communities to help victims and their families. Given the scale of the disaster, the only thing that we are certain is that there are hundreds of thousands of people who need help, every effort, every penny and every second counts,” she said. David Gu, President of USCCC, added, “we are proud that several non-profit organizations are pooling our efforts and resources together to demonstrate united support to the disaster-stricken area. We urge people from all walks of life, community organizations and businesses to do their utmost and show their compassion and support.” Although 8,000 miles away, China has been the top trading partner of the DFW Metroplex for years, benefiting many communities and businesses. Dallas mayor Tom Leppert has recently led a large delegation on a tour to several cities in China to foster closer partnerships and co-operations. “In an era of globalization and flattening world, people from afar are actually surprisingly closer than one may realize,” Dr. Jun Ren commented, “hence we have an obligation to care and provide our help as much as we can.” A series of outreach efforts will be launched immediately to rally support. Individuals or businesses interested in providing financial support can write check payable to “2008 China Earthquake Relief Fund”, account details as below: Account Name: 2008 China Earthquake Relief Fund Account Number: 737886333 Routing number: 1110006141 Opening Bank: Chase Bank Contact: Ms. Yvon Wang Tel: 972.596.7483 Bank location: 1700 Coit Rd, Plano, TX 75075 Checks can be deposited at any Chase bank location, or online bill pay, or mail the check to ACP’s mail box at PO Box 832865, Richardson, TX 75083.
