SHANGHAI, China (AP) -- A Chinese petrochemicals tycoon could be a top contender to buy debt-strapped British soccer team Leeds United, a Chinese newspaper reported Tuesday.
Xu Ming, president of PVC housing materials maker Shide, has since the beginning of this year repeatedly expressed interest in buying teams in South Korea, Australia, Italy and the United States, the Shanghai Morning Post announced.
Xu, 31, also serves as chairman of Chinese first division soccer team Dalian Shide, the seven-times national champions who boast several Chinese international's on their squad. Xu has said he would like to partner the team with top European clubs, according to the company's Web site.
Leeds is looking for new investors to help reduce its 79 million pound (US$134 million) debt. Among the contenders, is Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Mubarak al-Khalifa, a member of the royal family in Bahrain.
However, Leeds Chairman John McKenzie has business interests in Asia and there has been speculation that he could be part of a Chinese-backed bid. McKenzie announced on Monday he was stepping down to avoid any possible conflict of interest in negotiations with new investors.
Xu, 31, was listed as China's 14th richest man in 2002 with assets of about US$300 million.
"While Xu Ming is still just one of the possible contenders, there are no other buyers that can come close to Shide's financial strength," the newspaper said.
