Then came the pandemic fallout, which wasn't kind to Trump who didn't know how to run against Joe Biden, an aged Democrat campaigning from his Delaware basement.

When defeated in the 2020 presidential election, Trump, however, refused to concede to Biden, alleging without evidence that the election was fraudulent.

What followed was the Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, which Trump should have unequivocally denounced but failed to do so.

Yet, eager to ride on Trump's coattails, too many Republican officials have fallen in line with him, turning a blind eye to his irresponsible actions.

Former Vice President Pence stands out as one of the few exceptions, publicly rebuking the Capitol attackers.
