阿奎那在非基督徒中似乎也很有名，特別是他的關於上帝存在的五個“證明” - Five Ways。youtube上有很多的相關的視頻。當然也有反駁的，良莠不齊, 類似民間數學家證明歌德巴赫猜想。這個視頻，從一個完全不同的角度討論Five Ways. 當然Summa of the Summa, 或其它文章 也有提及，但還是聽兩位教授討論, 簡單也有意思。
除非讀神學院，專職侍奉，一般平信徒，不太會買本Summa Theologica在家讀。所以有人可能會意外，鼎鼎有名的Five Ways 出現在問題#2， Article 3. 全部五點論述 in one Article, 總共不到兩頁。整本Summa, 三千多頁，開宗明義，阿奎那解決的第一個問題是....? The Nature and Extent of Sacred Doctrine (Theology)!
從上述事實出發， 兩位教授談到了大眾對阿奎那，以及“Five Ways”的誤解。
這個視頻簡單的說。 一， 對阿奎那而言，上帝的存在is not a possibility. 考察summa 的結構，很顯然，他對這個問題此既不重視也看不出感興趣。現代許多人對他的了解只限於此，有失偏頗。
二，怎麼理解Five Ways？教授Karen指出Five Ways出現在Article 3, 緊接着
Article 1. Whether the existence of God is self-evident? 上帝的存在是否不言而喻
Article 2，Whether it can be demonstrated that God Exists? 是否可以展示/演示上帝存在？
有人會問，難道阿奎那思路不清，在“證明上帝的存在”之前提出這樣的問題？當然不是.
教授Karen認為這正好說明我們對Five Ways 有所誤解. “ … Five ways do not mean to lay the rational basis for everything to follow, ... what he is doing here is to ask what is the status of our knowledge of God, … not self-evident to us, … but we look around and we can reason to God. (阿奎那在這個問題上試圖討論的是我們對上帝知識的狀況如何？上帝的存在對我們有限的思維(man as finite being)，並非不言自明 (注1)，但是我們環顧世界，我們的理性將指向上帝。 (五種途徑)是對上述論述的一個附錄一個補充) the Five Ways work as … appendix”
三， Article 3 從原文拉丁文翻譯為Does God exist? 字面上講, 沒有錯。但是其意義meaning, 對現代人，與對阿奎那 ， Anselm, 並更早的基督徒，完全不同。彼時，上帝的存在從來不是一個需要打勾的待選項。視頻中反覆提到一個詞demonstrate, 不是證明，而是“展示演示“。這部分的討論與Ｋａｒｅｎ的第二個觀點有殊途同歸之意。
回到標題，Five Ways 中文翻譯為證明，不妥; 或者可以翻譯為思考認知上帝的存在的五種途徑？
Maybe the best way to understand Aquinas is to read Aquinas directly. Question 2 Second Article Reply to Objection 3. From effects not proportionate to the cause no perfect knowledge of that cause can be obtained. Yet from every effect the existence of the cause can be clearly demonstrated, and so we can demonstrate the existence of God from His effects; though from them we cannot perfectly know God as He is in His essence.
