“Parting the Red Sea" Effect
Recently I wrote a paper about Bell’s inequality. In Bell’s theory, he tried to derive a quantity with two methods. We would expect both methods yield the same answer. But Bell got different answers, hence Bell’s inequality, instead of equality. Why inequality? The standard answer is that the quantum world is wired. Is it so?
I went through the original Bell’s paper in great detail. The problem of Bell’s theory lies in its assumptions in the formulation. One assumption is not consistent with known experimental results. That is why the results Bell derived are different.
Almost in every field I explore, the foundational results are wrong or extremely exaggerated. You might say this is impossible. There are so many smart people in the world. It is simply impossible that the foundational results are all wrong.
Well, think again, think about religion. Moses parted the Red Sea. This story is of foundational importance in Judaism and Christianity. Is it true? Or think about each and every miracle in any religion. Is anyone true?
You might say science is different. But scientific theory, like religious theology, is about theo, or god. The proponents of any scientific theory, like the proponents of any religious theology, want their theory to be fantastic. But only fantasy is truly fantastic. There are indeed many smart people in this world. Each and every smart guy will take advantage of fantastic theories to glorify science, which is to glorify themselves, the followers of science.
Take Bell’s inequality for example. There are two assumptions in its formulation. If one pointed out that one assumption was inconsistent with known experimental results, Bell’s theory becomes trivial. Instead, the result is associated with another assumption. Then the result looks like “parting the Red Sea”.
It has been six decades since Bell’s paper was first published (1964). Some people must have found out the problem. Among those who found out, most would keep their cool, enjoying the privilege from their association with a “parting the Red Sea” theory. Few, if any, might speak out, get discredited and their careers destroyed. Blasphemy is the most sinister crime.
In its early stage, science was mostly practiced by amateurs, such as Copernicus, Wallace or Mendel. Amateurs seek truth out of amor, or love. But with the success of science, it is no more a passion pursued by amateurs. It has become a profession, a huge profession heavily guarded by an army of professionals. The thirst for “parting the Red Sea” effect almost guarantees that most miraculous works in every important field are indeed miracles.
The paper’s link is provided. It is quite technical, for your reference only.
