I think aa88's intention is misunderstood by many.
He doesn't say that one shouldn't learn English. He is saying English should be taught but it shouldn't assume an overwhelming role in China to a point where people think English is more important than their own language.
If you want to be respected in the world, the first thing is to respect your own culture, your own language, your own customs. Why would any American or Canadian respect a Chinese who thinks his own language/culture/customs are inferior ?
Ask yourself this...would any Chinese respect anybody who kowtows to Chinese?
