再見

我們對黃河岸邊
那座村莊和垂柳說
“再見！”
”可我們還會回來
在不久的一天。”

我們對追趕在身後
那些光着屁股的孩子們說
“再見！”
可身後那條塵土飛揚的離別小路
變的越細越遠。

我們對拂面而過的微風說
“再見！”
可記得在風雪交加的夜晚
它曾經穿過薄薄的牆壁
幾乎撕裂了我們的臉。

我們對彼此說聲
“再見！”
可不要忘記北方烈日下
我們曬黑的臂膀
和錘鍊。

我們對和我們一起來到這村莊
頭上戴着花結最年青的那個女孩子說
“再見！”
可留下不走的她讓我們捎帶
給遠在天邊的媽媽一封信箋。

我對我開始變得模糊的記憶說
“再見！”
”還在嗎， 那些孩子們，那個女孩，和岸邊的垂柳，
在那個四月的一天？”

"Goodbye," we say
to the village and the willow trees
on the bank of the Yellow River,
"but will return some day."

"Goodbye," we say
to the children running behind without shorts on
along the dusty road
becoming narrow each mile we go away.

"Goodbye," we say
to the breeze once cut open our faces
in the stormy winter night
through the walls we stay.

"Goodbye," we say
to ourselves browned and toasted and toughened
under the northern China sun
"will remain true to you and me."

"Goodbye," we say
to the youngest girl with a bowtie on her hair
who came with us but left behind
handing over a letter for her mother in a city
far far away.

"Goodbye," I said
to my memory
"where are the children, the girl, the willow trees?"
in that April day...
