I have read very carefully the letter from the law firm representing Professor Yau. As a bystander during the past several months, I have followed the relevant posts and blogs with great interest. It is easy for me to come to the conclusion that there are certain people, perhaps professional mathematicians themselves, who were behind the article of Ms Nasar and associates but did not leave a trace. As the Chinese saying goes, these people were shooting invisible arrows at Professor Yau in the darknes. Despite the shortcomings Professor Yau might have (we all have shortcomings), he is without doubt the xxxxost mathematician of Chinese origine in the last few decades and I will always respect the courage and integrity he has demonstrated in challenging the horrendous widespread corruption among the higher educational system in China. Obviously he has been targeted by certain special interest groups in China. I have no doubt that Ms. Nasar has received assistance from certain individuals who are at loggerheads with Professor Yau either personally or professionally.
Now let me come to the central issue here. Professor Yau, as one of the best mathematicians of the last few decades, is viciously attacked by the article by Ms. Nasar and associates. If we tolerate such slanderous attacks on Professor Yau without taking any stand as a community, we are basically telling people who, for whaterver reasons, have a hidden agenda against people of Chinese origin, that they can trample or walk on us, our children and our grandchildren with impunity. Is that a nice scenario to look forward to?
Therefore, it is no longer Professor Yau who was attacked. The lawsiut of Professor Yau is a prefect vehicle for us to show our solidarity with each other. We must tell the world that Chinese people must be treated fairly, like every one else on earth. Some people have proposed the excellent idea of setting up a defence fund in support of Professor Yau. I think we must do it right now. Are there any allumni associations of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the USA? Please take the lead now!!! I am appealing to every and each one of you. Please do something right now. Finally but not the least, please do not get Professor Yau involved in this personally.
Thank you so much for your patience and support!
