在2002年的中共十六大召開之際，胡錦濤介紹時惹出大笑話。一向中規中矩的胡錦濤介紹當時最年長的新常委羅干，尊稱羅干是[我們的老大哥]。不料英文翻譯竟譯成[He is our big brother]，令現場記者大為錯愕。

專家指英文[big brother]意思是[Any person that seems to want to control people’s lives and restrict their freedom]（想控制人民生活和限制人民自由的人），[有黑社會老大之意]，豈能不令人錯愕？準確譯法應是[He is the oldest one among us](他在我們中年齡最大)。
