一.【轉】這次要不是有視頻，又可能又不了了之。黑人憤怒的一個原因之一就是白人的話往往是 automatically believed, 黑人的 automatically discounted.
我剛到美國時美國最轟動的新聞是一個Charles Stuart 精心策劃，把身懷六甲的妻子殺了，嫁禍於一個黑人男子的事件。
我剛到時還沒破案，Stuart 說他和環孕妻子開車被一個黑人打劫，結果黑人把妻子殺了。警察馬上相信他的話，把波士頓附近的黑人區翻了個底朝天。天天在電視上看到白人警察闖入黑人家，攔截黑人，搜查黑人，甚至毆打黑人。校園裡也情緒非常緊張。連一些教授學生也都嘀咕黑人這個、黑人那個。
結果案件方向大轉。記着是 Stuart 的兄弟良心發現，告訴警察是 Stuart 把自己的妻子殺了。校園裡大多數都不吭聲了，只是尷尬的沉默和少數黑人學生的憤怒。
如果沒有 Stuart 的兄弟，一個或者數個無辜的黑人可能會鐺琅入獄
二.轉：人們不會知道哪一根是壓垮
的最後稻草until趴下來。這幾年我們已經看到無數根稻草 但都沒有壓倒那。不過這前國防部長的詞語尖銳 立意深刻 時機敏感 其份量不可小覷！
三.【創造歷史】This was the first time in the U.S. history that at least 4 retired 4-star generals, all honorable men, and 2 of them former chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have rebuked a sitting U.S. President.

In Union There Is Strength
團結就是力量
I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled. The words “Equal Justice Under Law” are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.

When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.

It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. James Madison wrote in Federalist 14 that “America united with a handful of troops, or without a single soldier, exhibits a more forbidding posture to foreign ambition than America disunited, with a hundred thousand veterans ready for combat.” We do not need to militarize our response to protests. We need to unite around a common purpose. And it starts by guaranteeing that all of us are equal before the law.
麥迪遜曾在【聯邦黨人文集】第十四篇寫道：“縱使只有少數軍隊或沒有一兵一卒，一個團結的美國，也要比一個擁有十萬精兵備戰但分崩離析的美國，更讓有野心的外敵望而生畏”。我們不需要挾着軍隊回應抗爭。我們需要在一致的目標下團結彼此。而團結的第一步，就是確保在法律之前人人平等。
Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that “The Nazi slogan for destroying us...was ‘Divide and Conquer.’ Our American answer is ‘In Union there is Strength.’” We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis—confident that we are better than our politics.

Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.

Americans in hospitals, grocery stores, post offices, and elsewhere have put their lives on the line in order to serve their fellow citizens and their country. We know that we are better than the abuse of executive authority that we witnessed in Lafayette Square. We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution. At the same time, we must remember Lincoln’s “better angels,” and listen to them, as we work to unite.
