        I hated the weathery yawl from which the pools

        Disclosed the sea floor and the wilderness

        Of waving weeds. I hated the vivid blooms

        Curled over the shadowless hut, the rust and bones,

        The trees likes bones and the leaves half sand, half sun.

        To stand here on the deck in the dark and say

        Farewell and to know that that land is forever gone

        And that she will not follow in any word

異鄉人·史蒂文斯(1879生—1955卒)

            我討厭雨打的雙桅船水潭

            呈現海底蠻荒之地

            雜草隨波漂蕩。我討厭鮮艷的花卉

            蜷縮在沒有陰影的茅屋，滿處鏽菌形如枯槁，

            樹木像骨頭而樹葉一半像沙子，一半像陽光。

            黑暗中去甲板上說聲

            告辭並意識到那片地從此消失

            而且她沒打算討論

            或者說，再也不想，只是

            我曾愛過她……別了。往前開，高帆船。

【注】久住大費城西北地區的華裔子弟恐怕都熟悉金城、蜀苑、郭夫人、擔擔食府、品味、成都、聚友坊、功夫、梅婷、點心工坊、八八麵館等中餐酒家，逢年過節招待賓客的時候更是跟着父母親輪番光顧此地，如今邁進大學的孩子們已逐漸培養出自己的生活格調，“齋必變食，居必遷坐”。顯然，對於廝守故地的家長們來說，迎合成長的最好方式之一就是投其所好。

記得1994年初訪波士頓(意譯“小村莊”)時，我曾在南部海港區嘗試過“合法海鮮店”的魚蝦蟹貝，它的座右銘——“不新鮮便不合法！”(If it isn't fresh, it isn't Legal!)象徵着食材時令與生猛，這也是國殤節長周末我們選中這家旗艦店的緣由。
