【注】1900年代初期，旱地(Catasauqua)不过是一个5,000多人的小镇，曾被视为美国城镇中白手起家百万富翁比例最高的地方。有趣的是，它以极其奇特的方式闻名于世：第一，1776年《独立宣言》签署者之家所在地；第二，1917年第一次世界大战期间，因为是第一个筹集超过100万美元战争债券(War Bonds)的社区又被誉为“百万美元小镇”；第三，1840年以来作为无烟煤铁工业龙头产地而一举成为美国工业革命的发源地。

截至1900年为止，旱地已是许多成功商人之家，这些业主涉及炼铁、铸造、金属加工、水泥生产、丝绸与天鹅绒厂等领域，喜欢建造独出心裁、象征个人财富的别墅。时隔200多年之后，大部分豪宅仍幸存至今，尽管几乎所有的豪宅都已被改建成公寓，同时还在其院落地盘上加盖了车库和其它小附属房舍。无疑，旱地居民历史街区(Residential Historic District)不仅蕴载了文化脉络，而且见证了历史变迁，是后人从历史走向未来最重要的精神传承。
