NEW DELHI: In yet another tragic accident in the Navy, a sailor was killed and another four were reported missing after a torpedo recovery vessel (TRV) sank 30 nautical miles south of Visakhapatnam at about 8pm on Thursday.

Till late in the night, hectic search and rescue operations were in progress to find the missing personnel.

The mishap took place when the aging 110-tonne TRV A-72, which was commissioned way back in February 1983, was on a routine mission to “recover” practice mines and torpedoes fired by fleet warships off the Vizag coast in the evening.

“Water suddenly flooded one of her compartments, which finally led to the sinking of the TRV,” said an officer.

I think it is more of human mistakes that lead to such accidents instead of aging of infrastructures. Strict operations is the need of the time. Of course, also need to gradually replace old apparatus by introducing new infra.

The Indian planes are falling out of the sky. The naval ships are sinking and colliding.There has be something very wrong with our security forces. Is it equipment or training?Is it the maintenance? The Defence Ministry must wake before we are depleted our planes and ships. The new minister of defence has a job cut out for him.

It is sad that so many sailors have perished in accidents. It is a continuing example of sloppiness in the system .we are far far away from being a developed country. In the US drills are carried out every day of the week as though the country is in a war footing. The vessels are well maintained and the crew is well trained. We should stop the chest thumping and really get down to correcting our inadequises.

Why to buy equipment and let it rot? Small neighbours like Pakistan, Bangla Desh, Sri-Lanka and even Mauritius cannot be tamed with all these high priced imported equipment. The govt. does not have any strategy or focus-just buy blindly at the taxpayers expense.

something fishy is going on in the Navy .. just because the vessel is about 30 yrs doesn’t mean it has to sink. There are many countries with vessels far more older functioning fine as long as the service and maintenance is done properly.
