送走了客人
我倆去做晚飯
系上圍裙時
突然(bin)出了眼淚
想起了客人說過的幾句話

你喜歡魚片
沒有骨頭
抹上了玉米粉
在滾油里炸得脆脆的--
南方的口味

我也喜歡魚
但是全魚
洗淨了清蒸
再擺上幾絲綠蔥--
東方的口味

當你把烤得鬆軟的牛油玉米餅
伸到我用醬麻油調成的滷汁里
蘸着
吃得津津有味時
我笑了
為你的不倫不類

你說
我不是黃色的
你也不是白色的
其實每個人
都是有色的
--而這世界上
愚昧的人還是會有的

那頓飯
吃
得
美
滿

Food for the Soul

The guests gone,
we prepare the meal together.
I complain,
hurt,
reduced to fury
by their subtle insinuations.

You like your fish
crisp, coated with cornmeal,
fried deep.
A southern boy you are.

My fish is whole,
velvety, steamed with slivers of green onions,
the way it's been done
for thousands of years.

You bake buttered cornbread fluffy
and dip it in the thick gravy I've brewed
from soy sauce, sesame oil, and cilantro.
I laugh
over your absurdity.

You say
I am not "colored"
just like you are not "white".
These are the terms
used in an art class.
There are jerks.
But we don't have to be one.

This meal,
unsurpassed.
