有网友提出当今美国东、西海岸比中部、西部先进很多。
兄弟不敢苟同。
东、西岸在平均发展水平上高于全美平均水平,这点应该
是没有什么问题的。但兄弟以为,在中部和西部,同样有
不亚于、甚至社会发展水平比两岸不少州更高的地区。比
如中西部的明尼苏达州和威斯康星州,社会发展水平就相
当高。参照1995-1997三年平均的中间收入(Median Income),
它们分别排在全美第七($41,482)和第八名($41,215)。兄弟
所在的西部高原之州科罗拉多,更是高居全美第六
($42,664)。另一个评估某地社会发展水平的重要指标是贫
困人口占总人口的百分率(% people in poverty),科罗拉多
以9.2%排第七低,明尼苏达和威斯康星分别排第八低
(9.5%)和第四低(8.5%)。同处西部洛基山区的尤他州排名也
不俗,中间收入排第十五($39,694),贫困率更排在第三低
(8.3%)。
东北部海岸老牌发达州如新泽西、马里兰、康涅狄格、马
萨诸赛、新汗不什尔等,仍然在全美持领先地位。西岸三
州则颇为出人意外。被一些网友称为全美最富的加立福尼
亚(相信有这种印象的网友不在少数),中间收入仅排全美
第十六($39,358),连前十名都进不了。华盛顿与俄勒冈也
只排在第十四($39,358)和第十九($37,287)。更为惊人的是
加州的贫困率,竟高达16.7%,列全美第四十三名(倒数第
九)!华盛顿与俄勒冈也只是分别排第二十一(11.2%)和二
十三(11.5%),居中游水平。加州所以持重的是人口数量绝
对领先于其他州,经济总量庞大,高科技集中。最后这一
优势因其他多个高科技中心的兴起,已开始被逐渐削弱。
近十年来是美国开发西部的另一高潮。洛基山地区的数州,
如科罗拉多、尤他、亚利桑那、内华达等,基本囊括全美
人口增长最快州的前三名。其原因除了该地区经济飞速增
长外,也反映了当今美国人生活方式的一大改变。即厌倦
了拥挤的都市生活,寻求更贴近自然、更注重家庭价值
(Family Value)和生活质量(Quality of Life)的生活方式的潮流。
兄弟十分喜欢高原之州科罗拉多以及MILE HIGH CITY丹佛。
这里的政治、经济、文化、体育的发展水平在全美都是一
流的。关于科罗拉多的发展史,有许多有趣的故事。网友
有兴趣的话,兄弟不才愿与大家分享,或许对我国发展西
部能有些许启迪。如果我们的青藏高原、天山南北也能发
展到这种程度,那就太好了。那边海括天空,大家不必都
往沿海跑了。
