To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen. (Revelation 1:5,6)
Glory to Christ our King
The Bible uses a lot of comparisons to describe how important Jesus is to us. One of them is that Jesus Christ is our King. However, Jesus’ kingdom is not something we can pinpoint on a world map. The kingdom of Christ is unique. “He has made us to be a kingdom.” His believers are the subjects of Jesus’ kingdom. But our King is not an oppressive sovereign who rules us heartlessly. He “loves us.” He has our best interests always in mind. He controls all things for our greatest good. His love is so high, so wide, so deep, that it encompasses and embraces us every moment of our lives. The greatest act of his love is what he did to make us his kingdom. He “has freed us from our sins by his blood.” He shed his blood to wash away the guilt of our sins. Now we are free from the punishment that our sins deserved. What an awesome King we have! He purchased us with his blood so that we could be his very own people forever.
So what does this lead us to do? Jesus “has made us to be…priests to serve his God and Father.” In the Old Testament – the time before Jesus lived on earth, the priests offered sacrifices to God on behalf of the people. Animals were sacrificed and their blood was shed to forgive sin. It was not animal’s blood, though, that could have such power. When the priest sacrificed an animal, this act looked forward to the sacrifice of the Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world.
********Jesus’ death ended the purpose for Old Testament bloody sacrifices by priests. But it didn’t bring an end to the priesthood.******
********Jesus has made you and me his priests. And the sacrifice that we bring to God is not the blood of an animal, but the praise that we give our God and Father with our lips and lives.
Precious Jesus, I praise you for being my King. To you be glory and power for ever and ever!
