You may have mistakenly equated the slightly more civilized way of living to higher morality.

The highest moral code is symbolized by the ten commandments, which is summed up by Jesus as "love your God with all your heart/soul/strength/mind and love your neighbor as yourself".

Are we any closer to that lofty moral ground? Only a little bit. We are still trekking upward from close to the dark valley of immorality.
