Currently reading 1 Maccabees, and I seem to perceive how the zeal for God and His Laws of the Maccabee's gradually turned into zeal for country, kinsmen and one's own cause, how the name of the Lord gradually decreased as the power struggle between Jews and Greeks went on. Is that generally being perceived by Catholic teachers? Or am I imagining things? If Gems is around, can you shed some light?
