Help Saving Angela

Angela, a lovely 4-year-old Chinese girl living in Seattle, was diagnosed with Brainstem Glioma (a malignant brain tumor) last week, and expecting 0.5-2 years (average of 7 months) to live according to the doctors.

To her parents, The nightmare began from last Monday(09/13/2008) afternoon when they came to her school to bring their daughter home. They noticed that Angela is walking a little bit limping. They brought her to the family doctor the next day, and she was sent to the emergency room of Seattle Children's Hospital right away. CT and MRI were done immediately, and the result was shocking, left her mom and dad shaking: Brainstem Glioma.

They've been seeking second opinion from Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and did some other private consult, but no difference for the diagnosis. As the location of the tumor is at the connection of brain and spine, surgery is totally impossible. It seems the only choice is radiation. Even if the radiation is very effective, it will only slow down, not stop the growing. That means, there is no cure right now, the best situation is to gain a little bit longer time. It's heart breaking looking at such a sweet little one suffering: within several days, she can hardly balance while walking, and she is having swallowing difficulty...She looked so normal and healthy even 10 days ago! The family is now in such a shock. It's like cutting her mom and dad's heart to pieces!


Her dad’s company insurance covers all and they don't have financial difficulty by now. But the family is going through hell and absolutely need some help. They are still desperately seeking other ideas and treatment alternatives. They are very willing to let everyone to spread information for them.

• They are facing some immediate difficult decisions. If any expert who can speak Chinese can talk with them about it, it will be very helpful.
o Whether to join a Phase 2 Clinic Trial (their doctor seems “hope” them to join)
o Whether to insist trying fine needle Biopsy. The position is very difficult for biopsy, and their doctor told them there is not very much value to take the risk.
• If you know (directly or indirectly) anyone who has related experience (either as ex patient's friend/family or as doctor/nurse/Scientist), please talk to them, and contact us if you feel the information useful.
• If you know (directly or indirectly) any expert in Beijing who has related experience, please contact us. One of their friends went back to Beijing for one month from today. He brought back all Angela's picture/data with him, and is willing to consult for them from Beijing. But this friend doesn’t know any doctor specialized in Brain Tumor in Beijing. (Especially, if you know someone from TianTan Hospital or Beijing Children's Hospital, that will be very helpful).
• If you know anyone who has family/friends got fatal cancer and survived, please talk to them about Angela's family, and contact us. Angela's parents want to get suggestions on how to change food structure for her.
