It may be counter-intuitive, but sole practice is very different from those big law firms. There is no connection whatsoever between how good you are and opening your own practice. Some actaully could not find a descent job after graduation and had to settle with a low-pay job. After a couple years apprenticeship, those people are more equipped to open their own firms than their big firm counterparts.
