ATHENS, 17 August - The Men's and Women's Olympic Tennis tournament moves into second round Singles action at the Olympic Tennis Centre on Tuesday, along with second round Men’s Doubles matches and the remainder of the Women’s Doubles first round.
There is a star-studded line-up on Centre Court, with four Grand Slam singles champions and two Olympic medallists in action.
Justine HENIN-HARDENNE (BEL) gets play underway in the day session on the main show court, the world No. 1 playing Maria VENTO-KABCHI (VEN) for the chance to advance to the third round at her first Olympics.
HENIN-HARDENNE is followed on court by Juan Carlos FERRERO (ESP), her fellow champion at Roland Garros in 2003. The fifth-seeded Spaniard meets Mardy FISH (USA).
In the night session, 2000 Olympic Gold medallist Venus WILLIAMS (USA), holder of four Grand Slam titles, plays Maja MATEVZIC (SLO) on Centre Court.
After that there is an intriguing clash between 2000 Olympic silver medallist Tommy HAAS (GER) and 2003 US Open champion Andy RODDICK (USA). HAAS has won four of their past five meetings, but lost their last encounter in the quarterfinals at Cincinnati two weeks ago.
The day session on Show Court 1 features No.3 seed Anastasia MYSKINA (RUS) against Kristina BRANDI (PUR). Having cruised through her first round match for the loss of just one game, the reigning Roland Garros champion looks in good ???? in her bid to win an Olympic medal.
Roger FEDERER (SUI) takes on Tomas BERDYCH (CZE) on Show Court 1 and will be hoping for a more convincing per????ance than the one which saw him defeat Nikolay DAVYDENKO (RUS) in three sets in the first round.
In the night session FEDERER goes back out on the same court in the doubles with Yves ALLEGRO (SUI). The pair face No.3 seeds Mahesh BHUPATHI/Leander PAES (IND), who have reunited specially in an attempt to bring India an Olympic medal.
Amelie MAURESMO (FRA) is also in action on Show Court 1. One of the favourites to become Olympic champion, the No. 2 seed meets Maria Elena CAMERIN (ITA).
Home hope Eleni DANIILIDOU (GRE), the only Greek player to survive the first round in any of the four tennis events, bids to reach the third round against No.15 seed Magdalena Maleeva. Their match completes the night session on Centre Court. |
