The injury to his left leg was minor, and the team says the player was treated at a hospital and released.
The shooting happened about 4 a.m. Tuesday, a few hours after the Rockets returned from a game at New Orleans. Houston police say Landry went home after the team arrived about 12:30 a.m. before going out.
A car with two occupants hit Landry from behind. Police said Landry was shot when he got out to inspect the damage, and the other vehicle left the scene.
Landry is in his second season and has become a valuable player off the bench for the Rockets.
