1. It is called “engagement ring”. Maybe I came here too young (after high school). I kinda think that this is a social standard here. When a couple decide to get married, it is conventional for the man to buy an engagement ring, usually a diamond solitaire ring. Each will also get a wedding band. A rule of thumb is that the man spends 2 months of salary. Or it can be a ring with a family history, say from his grandma.

2. Most women love pretty stuff. Diamond ring happens to be one of them. There is even a song – “Diamond is girls’ best friend”. And diamond ring just happens to be expensive, much more expensive than the usual kinds, such as clothes, handbags, and other jewelries.

3. If you are a guy, you may have expensive hobbies as well, such as golfing, skydiving, surfing, sailing, etc. No big deal!

4. If your girlfriend wants a diamond ring, why not give one to her and make her happier. Just think about how much you want that BMW hardtop convertible for yourself.
