There is no such thing as a happy ending

There was this girl named Yumi. She was a 10 years old and loved to listen to music and draw, she had dark brown hair with a streak of red, and she had dark brown eyes too. Yumi had a great life, her parents were very nice to her, great friends, cool school, friendly teachers, and good grades. Yumi’s life was wonderful until that day...

“MOM! DAD!” yelled Yumi. Yumi’s house was on fire because of her stupid older brother, who shouldn’t have dropped the lighter on the ground! Yumi ran around the house looking for her parents making sure she didn’t catch her clothes on fire. Yumi find her dad and her brother trying to help her mom, who was unconscious and trapped under a piece of fallen wood. Yumi’s father shouted “LEAVE, YUMI, NOW!!! BEFORE YOU DIE!!!”. “I’M NOT LEAVING WITHOUT YOU GUYS!” shouted Yuma. Suddenly everything went black and the last thing she heard was a screams.

The next morning, Yumi find herself in a white bed with small bedside table on the left side of the bed. Yumi was a bit dizzy from last night and couldn’t remember what happened. Yuma finally noticed that she was in the hospital. She got out of the bed and looked around the room, Yumi saw a small light brown closet with her clothes in it but, they weren’t her clothes, they were new clothes someone bought her because she noticed a note sitting on the table saying from your friends, Yuki, Nodoka, Sakura, and your best friend, Misa. Yumi was so happy that she had great friends like Misa. Yumi also noticed that she had her head bandaged up, also her left leg and arm. Yumi noticed another note left on the table saying;
“Dear Ms. Yumi,
My name is Watari and I am sorry to say that your parents and your brother didn’t make it out of the house and died. But luckily the firefighter was able to rescue you in time. Since you have no relatives you can stay with, you will be staying in a whammy’s orphanage for gifted children because of your excellent grades. You will be going to the orphanage tomorrow at 1:00 pm; I will pick you up myself so pack up all your things and don’t forget anything.
Watari”

Yumi was frozen for a moment then broke down in tears. Yumi was crying so hard she couldn’t even breathe until a nurse came in and calmed her down. Yumi just sat in her bed staring at the ceiling, her eyes were all red from all the crying. She kept on thinking that her parent’s and her brother’s death was all her fault because she didn’t help them. That night, Yumi cried herself to sleep.

The next morning, got up out of bed and still sad about her parents and brother. Near 1:00 pm, she found a present on her bed signed by all her friends. Yumi smiled abit that she was glad she had kind friends. Yumi opened the present to find a hairbrush for her long hair, a bracelet with her name on it, an iPod and notebook with pencils and pencil crayons, and an album with a bunch of pictures with her friends and family in it. Yumi’s smile grew wider when she looked though the album. Yumi remembered every picture was taken, that picture was when she was with her friends at Wonderland, that picture was when she was at the Christmas party with her friends, and the last picture was a picture of her family.

At 1:00 pm, Yumi was waiting outside the entrance of the hospital for Watari to come. There was a nurse waiting with her to make sure that Yumi is safe. She noticed a fancy looking car park right in front of her and an old man come out of the car. Yumi looked at the old man for a moment then, ask “are you Watari?” The old man replied “yes I am Watari”. With a warm smile, Yumi thought she was able to trust that he was Watari. Watari put Yumi’s bags in the trunk of the car and got into the car with Yumi. Yumi sat in the back staring out the window, wondering what the orphanage would be like.

When they finally got to the orphanage, Yumi looked out the other window to see a very large building with kids running around the place. Watari helped Yumi out of the car as Yumi kept on staring at the orphanage, excited. Watari got Yumi’s bags out of the trunk and started walking with Yumi to the entrance of the orphanage. Lots of kids were staring at Yumi that made her nervous like she was reading aloud to lots of people. Watari and Yumi finally got to the entrance of the orphanage when suddenly a man opened the door so fast that it made Yumi fall to the ground. The man had black hair, had a lollipop in his mouth, and was wearing a long sleeve white shirt and baggy jeans. The man looked down at Yumi in a curious face. The man said “sorry” and helped up Yumi from off the ground. He said his name was L which Yumi thought was a wired name. L studied her from head to toe. Suddenly, L called out a name “Near”.

Suddenly, a small kid with white hair and was wearing white pyjamas was standing beside L. “what do you need? L” asked Near. “I need you to help this girl find her room and here is the key to her room” answered L. L handed Near the key and Watari gave Near the bags which surprisingly Near could handle. Near and Yumi entered the orphanage. They went up lots of stairs that made Yumi tired but not Near. Near looked at the number on the key and told Yumi that her room is at the end of the hall. When they finally got to Yumi’s room, Near gave Yumi her key and bags, and told her she didn’t have go to classes today because she has to unpack and get her schedule from Watari. Near left and Yumi entered her room. It wasn’t a small nor a large room but a medium sized room, the walls were painted light blue and the floor was wood covered, there was a small bed Near the top left corner of the room and a table on the right of the bed, a door that leads to the bathroom, and a small closet beside the bathroom door. Yumi thought the room was cool and jumped on the bed then, silently wishing her parents and brother were here. Yumi got up from the bed then, started to unpack all her things. Near the afternoon, she heard a knock on her door; she opened the door to see Near standing there playing with a piece of his hair. Near said “we are having dinner now”. “Let’s go! I’m starved!” shouted Yumi. Yumi dragged Near down to the cafeteria. Yumi and Near got a sit Near the end of the cafeteria. “I’m going to get us both dinner be right back” said Yumi happily. Yumi grabbed two trays for both Near and her, filled it with food, then went back to the table. Yumi put Near’s tray in front of him. Then Yumi started to eat. Yumi had finished her food first before Near, she got bored of waiting for Near, then she tried to touch his hair. Near looked up at her with a surprised face, no one had ever touched his hair in such a way beside himself. Near smiled from Yumi’s touch then moved the other way because he had never been so close to a girl. Yumi got up from the table and said goodbye to Near then walked to the door.
Suddenly, the door whacked right in Yumi’s face and she fell to the ground. A boy fling from the other side of the door then a guy and a girl came out from the other side of the door too; the boy had red hair and was playing a video game ignoring what else was happening, the girl had shoulder length blond hair and was wearing lots of leather also holding a broken bar of chocolate. Yumi thought the boy had broken the bar of chocolate the girl was eating. The blond girl was about to punch the boy but Yumi got up from the ground and protected the boy. The blond girl’s fist was about an inch away from Yumi’s face. The blond girl yelled “WHAT THE HELL! WHO THE HECK ARE YOU!?”. “My name is Yumi and FYI ???? it’s not nice to hit people or throw them around!” replied Yumi. “WHAT ARE YOU!? MY MOTHER! And I am NOT a GIRL! ” The blond girl shouted. “You aren’t a girl? ” asked Yumi, confused. The red headed boy laughed a bit. The blond boy glared at the red headed boy then the blond boy pushed Yumi aside and was about to punch the other boy. Suddenly, someone shouted “STOP!” Everyone turned their attention to L, who shouted stop and he had a mad expression on his face. “MELLO! MATT! WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING!? ” shouted L. Yumi thought to herself that the blond boy was Mello and the red headed boy was Matt. Two other teachers came into the cafeteria and picked up the wounded boy and took him to the nurse’s office. L said to the two boys “I am taking both of you to the detention center”. “WHAT DID I DO!?” shouted Matt. “You could have stopped Mello from hurting the boy but, instead you play some video game” answered L. “THATS NOT FAIR! IF I DID HELP, MY PERSON WOULD HAVE DIED THEN I WOULD HAVE LOST THE GAME! ” yelled Matt. “You should know by now that Mello gets in lots of fights and you should be making sure he doesn’t get into fights than focus on whets happening on your game thing” said L. L took the game from Matt and threw it in the garbage. “NO!!!” yelled Matt. Matt rescued his game from the garbage and hugged it. “Your safe!” said Matt. Lots of kids thought Matt was crazy. “Come on Matt” said L. Matt followed L and Mello to the detention center. Near ran to Yumi and helped her up. Mello turned around to see Near helping Yumi up from the ground. Mello sent a glare at Near which Near didn’t notice. Yumi smiled at Near and hugged him saying thank you. Mello couldn’t take it, why was Near always better than him at anything even getting a girl! It wasn’t fair to him, he had been always second to Near but not this time, he was going to get that girl to like him more than Near then ditch her later, then he would have beat Near at something for the first time. Mello laughed manically like a villain which made Matt freak out and back away from him.
Everyone left the cafeteria because it was getting late and everyone needed sleep. Yumi said good night to Near and walked to her room. Near thought of the hug Yumi gave him. No girl every hug him or smiled at him like Yumi did. Near started to think he was starting to like her, but he didn’t know if it was real or not. That night, Near had a hard time sleeping , but managed somehow to fall asleep.

The next morning, Yumi woke up and looked at her clock; it said 7:00 am. “OMG!” screamed Yumi. “Going to be late!” said Yumi. Yumi brushed her teeth, took a quick shower, changed her clothes, and ran like heck. When Yumi got to her classroom, she noticed that the calendar on the front of her classroom door said Saturday on it. Yumi screamed so loud it broke everything that was made glass, her scream woke up every person in the whole orphanage, and some people almost went deaf. Yumi stopped screaming after an hour. Near was looking for the source of the screaming. Mello was so mad he punched every boy he saw that was in his way of finding the person who was screaming so loud and woke him up on a Saturday. L was also looking for the screaming person and because he was a professional detective and he was the first person to find the screaming Yumi. “Why were you screaming?” asked L. Before Yumi could shout out her answer, Near came around the corner to find both of them, then before Near could say anything, a kid hit Near right into the wall, which knocked out Near. Yumi ran up to Near and looked at his head, Near’s head wasn’t bleeding but it was bruised. Mello had come right after Near got hit by the other boy and now he was madder than before because he saw the girl he liked was helping his worst enemy, Near. L walked over to Near and Yumi then, picked up Near. “If you are taking Near to the nurse’s office then I want to come to” said Yumi. Matt was looking for Mello and playing another game.

L had put Near on a bed while Yumi was sitting right beside him. Mello hit the closest wall and small pieces of wood fall from the spot Mello hit, Mello’s knuckles started to turn red then, bleed. L had left the nurse’s office leavening only Yumi and Near in the office. Mello started walking to the nurse’s office as quietly as he could make sure, Yumi didn’t hear him. Matt had walked right past the nurse’s office and didn’t notice Yumi and Near. Mello finally found the nurse’s office and started spying on Yumi and Near. L was going back to the nurse’s office to give Near a ice pack for the bruise when, he got to the nurse’s office then, saw Mello spying on Yumi and Near. Yumi heard someone talking and saw L talking to Mello. “What are you doing Mello?” asked L. Mello didn’t say anything. “I asked you a question, were you spying on Yumi and Near?” asked L. Mello noticed Yumi listening to the conversation with a frown on her face. Mello started to run away and L yelled at him to come back. Yumi heard something move then, she turned around to see Near sitting on the bed looking at her. Yumi smiled at him and he just looked at her with a confused face. L walked up to Near and gave him the ice pack. Near didn’t know why he needed an ice pack when he felt a sharp pain that was near his forehead. Near put the ice pack against his forehead and then, he felt a sharp sting from the bruise. Yumi held the ice pack against his forehead for him. After a few hours, Yumi looked at the bruise to see that it didn’t look that bad as it did before. Near said “thank you Yumi” then, ran off. Yumi just smiled and walked to her room to sleep.

The next morning, everyone was at the cafeteria having breakfast. Later, it was class time and everyone went to the classrooms. Yumi followed Near to their classroom and sat at a desk. Mello had walked into the room right after Near and Yumi got in. For some reason, Matt wasn’t with Mello today and Yumi thought maybe he was playing one of his games, over sleeping, or sick. Mello sat beside Yumi and apologized to Yumi and Near for being rude. Yumi and Near both said “it’s ok”. Yumi and Near looked at each other and started to laugh but, Mello didn’t laugh with them because that means they were becoming better friends which, Mello didn’t like. After class Yumi and Near were doing a puzzle together. Mello was just pretending to read a book but, really spying on Yumi and Near. L and watari came into the room and announced that Christmas was coming soon and everyone needed to help decorated the orphanage. “Christmas is some stupid holiday where, little kids send a list full of stupid toys that they will never get from the fat old man Santa, who ISN’T real!” shouted Mello. Lots of little kids started to cry because of Mello. Yumi punched Mello for being a stupid idiot. Near grabbed his puzzle than ran out of the room, after telling Yumi he would be in his room. Yumi smacked Mello one more time before she left to catch up with Near. Near was half way finished the puzzle when, Yumi step on it. Yumi looked down to see that she just stepped on the puzzle. “Sorry Near” whispered Yumi. “Its ok” replied Near. Near moved some of his toys out of the way so Yumi could sit down. They both started doing the puzzle all over again. After they finished the puzzle, Yumi looked out the window to see that it was dark outside. Yumi stood up and said “good night Near” and walked to her room. Yumi arrived at her room and went to sleep.

The next morning, Yumi did her normal morning activities. Yumi and Near played together while Mello was spying on them. Yumi got into her bed and stared at the ceiling for awhile, thinking of all the great things that have happened to her like meeting Near, and also she wouldn’t have been in this orphanage if she didn’t have good grades, for the first time in her life she actually was grateful for being smart cause most of the time she thought she was a total nerd for having good grades. Yumi thought what would happen in the future and Yumi slowly fell asleep.

5 years later...

There was a person named Kira killing criminals without touching them and L had left the orphanage to help out with the case. Yumi was 15 years old and Near was 14 years old. L would still keep in touch with Near and Mello because they were his successors. Near didn’t seem to like L as much as he did before for some reason.

Yumi was walking to the front entrance to say goodbye to one of her friends who was leaving the orphanage. Yumi walked past the office when she heard shouting coming from the room. Yumi opened the door slightly to see Near sitting on the ground, doing a puzzle and Mello shouting at some old man sitting on a chair. Mello turned to the door and started walking to it. Yumi got scared that Mello saw her and she ran away from the door in time before Mello could smash it into the wall. Yumi watched as Mello stomped all the way up the stairs. She looked back to see Near getting up from the ground and walking out the office. Near stopped right in front of Yumi and said “I am leaving this orphanage today because L is dead and I was chosen as his successor”. Yumi stared at Near for a long time then, suddenly started crying and fell to the ground. Near kneeled down and whispered “do you want to come? Yumi looked up at Near then replied “yes”. Near and Yumi started to pack up all their things and headed for the door. They were both standing at the door with lots of kids surrounding them, they were saying things like “why are you leaving?” or “I am going to miss you”. Suddenly, the door opened and a tall man was standing there. The man looked at Near then, looked at Yumi and said “you helping with the Kira case?” asked the man. “Yes I am” replied Yumi. “Ok then let’s go, both of you” said the man. The man, Near, and Yumi walked toward the car. Yumi thought to herself that finally she was going to do something with her life and help the world stop Kira from killing more innocent people. Yumi sat in the car with Near beside her, playing with a toy. “Near, don’t you think it’s great that we are finally leaving this orphanage?” asked Yumi. “I guess so” replied Near. Yumi thought to herself again that this was new adventure that was going to change her whole life and she could not wait.
