Susan
她說孩子有一個英文講演比賽,題目是給定的——“We are the morning star”,我說一聽就不是美國式的題目:)美國式的題目會是“Are we the morning star?”。
What Patriotism Means to Me
The word “patriotism” is often associated with things like
the Declaration of Independence, the Founding Fathers, or the brave soldiers
out there defending our country. That word makes Americans think about how
grateful they are to the men that fought for their country’s freedom, and how
proud they are of their country now. Many families would decorate their house
with stars and stripes on Independence Day to show their support for America. They
would say the Pledge of Allegiance every day. They would be the perfect
examples of good citizens. However, I don’t think that’s what patriotism is
about.
Yes, it is important to know the history of theUnited States, but just because someone can
memorize all theU.S.
presidents doesn’t make them patriotic. Yes, it is important to display the
proper spirit while celebrating for 4th of July, but just because
someone has their whole face painted red, white, and blue doesn’t make them truly
patriotic. I believe that patriotism is more than just showing my support for
my country. It’s actually doing
something to make my country better.
Our Founding Fathers fought for the liberty of this country.
Civil right advocates, like Martin Luther King, fought for the justice and
rights of all people. What about me? Even though I’m just a 13-year-old kid,
not yet old enough to vote, I believe I can do much more than just cheer during
the fireworks of 4th of July. I think that being a patriot isn’t
just being “the person who can holler the loudest without knowing what he is
hollering about”, as Mark Twain so humorously put it. There is a lot more that
I can do for my country.
In this new era of technology, there are many more
opportunities to serve my country other than becoming a soldier. I can become a
film editor, a teacher, a writer, or anything else. Whatever job I take, I will
do my best at it, and use my talent to makeAmericaa better place. To me, that
is what patriotism means. It means working hard to become not just a good
citizen, but a useful citizen. It means makingAmericabetter because of what I
can do. It means, starting now, to study hard in school, so that when I grow
up, I will be useful to my country. That is what patriotism means to me.
