根據The National Association for College Admission Counseling於2011年底對大學的招生人員進行的調查顯示，他們最看重的申請學生的10件事是：

1. 大學預科課程的成績（Grades in college prep courses）占83.4%

2. 課程強度（Strength of curriculum）占65.7%

3. SAT或ACT成績（SAT or ACT scores）占59.3%

4. 各科成績（Grades in all courses）占46.2%

5. 入學申請文章（Essay or writing sample）占26.6%

6. 表明對所申請學校的興趣（Student's demonstrated interest in the college）占23.0%

7. 班級中的名次（Class rank）占21.8%

8. 高中輔導員的推薦信（Counselor recommendation）占19.4%

9. 高中教師推薦信（Teacher recommendation）占19.0%

10. 專科考試成績（Subject test score (AP, IB [International Baccalaureate/國際文憑])）占9.6%
