今天準備介紹的有University of Pennsylvania, UC San Francisco和UC Berkeley大學。
UPenn的醫學院今年繼續保持第4的排名，同時在NIH獲得的資助中，排名第2。推薦的項目是Graduate Group in Genomics and Computational Biology (GCB) in Biomedical Graduate Studies in School of Medicine, http://www.med.upenn.edu/gcb
(1)GCB Program是和其他幾個Program例如神經，分子，藥學等，建立在醫學院的生物醫學研究生教育項目裡面。目前有來自全校醫學院，獸醫學院，統計系，計算機系，生物工程系等37位教授。在GCB的faculty一欄，http://www.med.upenn.edu/gcb/fac.shtml 裡面，列出了31位教授的名字。GCB在2004年新增了一名統計系的教授，Dr.Shane Jensen, http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/faculty/jensen.html，其主要研究方向是基因序列分析。他也是前面提到的Harvard統計系，Dr. Jun Liu的學生。
在2005年，GCB新增了5名教授，分別是：

(2)GCB Program從2001年開始招生，目前有20個左右的學生。在美國的申請者一般在每年的2月被邀請去面試，在面試後的1到2周內會得到錄取結果，不在美國的申請者會通過視頻和4個教授交談。
每年招生人數會保持在5個左右，一般發出的offer數會是15個，三倍於5，因為最終有的人會拿到更好的offer去其他的學校。不過我很推薦這個學校，因為每年在1月初的時候它們就決定了邀請去面試人的名單，不象有的學校，拖到4月的時候才出結果。
(3)如果有CS背景的同學，也同時可以考慮申請CIS系的PhD項目，在CIS系，有4個教授從事生物信息研究，具體信息可以登陸到 http://www.cis.upenn.edu/departmental/research.shtml 瀏覽。
(4)如果有統計或者數學背景的同學，可以考慮申請UPenn統計系的PhD，Dr.Jensen是統計系目前唯一做這方面研究的教授，或許以後還會招新的教授。還有一個選擇是，可以考慮申請醫學院的生物醫學研究生教育項目裡面的Biostatistics Program, 具體信息可以看 http://www.cceb.upenn.edu/main/education/biostatGraduate.html 。
清華（or 北大）一個數學系的mm就申請到了2005年Fall。
接下來介紹的是，UCSF，這是多少學醫學和生物人的夢想啊！值得介紹的專業是：
Graduate Program in Biological and Medical Inxxxxatics, http://www.bmi.ucsf.edu/
(1)整個Program有45名教授，非常龐大，研究力量也非常強。Program的錄取要求是至少本科學歷，同時the core curriculum assumes that students have substantial computer literacy, and are knowledgeable of the basic life sciences, introductory calculus, matrix manipulation, and elementary statistics. In addition, students should have additional coursework or experience in some aspect of computer science, which could include database or algorithm design, elementary knowledge of a programming language, software engineering, or database or system administration.
(2)2004年在它們的網站上看見了給國際學生的note，大意是申請它們這個program是如何如何困難，競爭如何如何厲害，給國際學生的獎學金非常有限，請大家不要浪費60美元的申請費。不過現在找不到這條信息了，算一個好的信號。
同樣的，提到UCSF就必須談談UC Berkeley了，UC Berkeley沒有醫學院，但是它的生物很強，同時，因為地理的關係，也和UCSF保持着很好的合作。UC Berkeley的Bioengineering系，http://bioeng.berkeley.edu/， 和UCSF合作成立了Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering, http://bioeng.berkeley.edu/graduate/index.html 。
（1）研究方向就包括 Computational Biology, Bioinxxxxatics, and Genomics，http://bioeng.berkeley.edu/graduate/bioinxxxxatics.html， 有15位來自UC Berkeley和UCSF的教授。
（2）申請要求：要求申請者對生命科學有着濃厚的興趣，同時要能證明有着很強的數學和物理的背景。另外，Appropriate academic preparation includes a two-year college mathematics sequence, including calculus and differential equations, and a one-year sequence in physics and chemistry, plus extensive upper-division work in either engineering or biology. A course in linear algebra is highly desirable.
UC Berkeley還建立了一個Graduate Group in Computational and Genomic Biology, http://computationalbiology.berkeley.edu/graduategroup.html . 但是和前面介紹的其他學校不同的是，這不是一個stand-alone的group，申請者需要通過申請單獨的系來進入這個group。
