I have read a lot of PKU bashing. I failed to see much fact in these posts. I was not fortunate enough to attend PKU, even though it would have been my #1 choice. I try to bring some common sense into the discussion.
1. Yau-Tian dispute started several years ago. Yau and Yang Le have huge influences in the top. Tian and other ChangJiang professors at PKU-Math are directly audited by China's Auditing Burea (中國審計署!) in the past two years. No other ChangJiang professors in China had such special treatment. They are cleared of any wrong doings.
2. Tian had a special deal with PKU and China. Any university in the world makes special deals with their valued faculties. There is no indication that any of these deals violated any ethical or legal codes, or any regulations. You have to understand that Tian is watched closely by Yau and many others.
3. Any University should and has the right to compete for resources. PKU and Yau competed for the Mah Center. PKU, with the help of Tian, got it. If there is a problem in awarding the center to PKU, Yau should complain to whoever made the decision, i.e., the Chinese government. He should not attack Tian over this.
4. PKU will continue to compete for resources and it will continue to attract the best people. If the process is unfair, do not attack PKU, but attack the decision makers.
5. PKU and China got the best deal in ChangJiang Professors. These prominent scientists come to China, got paid 15000yuan a month, often paying own travel expenses. PKU should have more of them.
6. Yes, there are a lot of problems in PKU, but ChangJiang Professors, Math Center are not among them.
