英語捷徑再來一招！“雙重否定句子”的用法

在英語寫作，會話時用雙重否定句子(double negatives)，有讓讀者和聽者覺得說者的英語有文筆精湛的效果。難題是，雙重否定句子是“不正常”的語文結構，需要不斷的練習才能遊刃有餘，毫無錯誤地應用。

 

以下為讀者們舉出幾個例子。

 

1. They don’t call economics “the dismal science” for nothing.

也就是說： Economics IS a dismal science.

 

2.  It is not that I disagree with what you said; I just think there is a better way to say it.

3. There is no one here who does not believe that helping the down-trodden is what a civilized society must do.

雙重否定也有誤用。尤其是美國南部黑人的英語，我們常聽到這種誤用的雙重否定句子：

 

I didn’t do nothing wrong.

 

(應該是 “I didn’t do anything wrong”.)

 

Badges? [pause] We ain't got no badges.

 

(像以上這樣的俚語很常見，尤其在流行歌曲的歌詞上，但這句話有幾個錯誤，一是誤用雙重否定，應該說 “…We ain’t got badges.” 可是呢（第二個錯誤）“ain’t” 這個字是 “am not” 的縮寫，而 “We am not got Badges” 文法上也不對，正確的說法應該是 "We haven’t got any badges.”）
