以前的多个关于“名校诺贝尔奖数”的版本多有谬误,特别是最初的一个。后来有人不断做出改进,但是全是“网友意见”,没有一个是权威的。最大的毛病是标准不一,有的学校采用的标准是毕业生、教授、曾经工作过什么都算,有的学校只有教授获奖的数据。有鉴于此,瑞典皇家学院诺贝尔委员会日前公布了唯一权威的世界各大学获诺贝尔奖数目,采用的是最有说服力的“得奖者当时工作单位”的标准。因为这个标准最能够说明大学当时的研究水平,并且可以避免“什么都算”带来的混淆、不公平和不合理。
根据此权威数据列表,获得10或更多次诺贝尔奖的大学共计9所,其中剑桥大学是唯一一所美国之外的。列表如下:

在这九所之下最领先的大概是牛津大学,但其上一次得奖还是在1972年。在3-9名诺贝尔奖之间,欧洲的著名大学足以和美国的名校分庭抗礼,而日本的东京、京都大学以此严格标准未能入选。美国获3次及以上诺贝尔奖的大学还有(按英文字母排列):康奈尔大学(Cornell),洛克非勒医学研究所(Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research,Princeton),洛克非勒大学(Rockefeller University, New York),宾夕法尼亚大学(U Penn),西雅图华盛顿大学(U Washington),圣路易斯华盛顿大学(Washington U),耶鲁大学。
