新一代華裔科學家在生命科學中的貢獻:一個初步的客觀分析
鄭言

吳瑞先生曾對華裔科學家的對生命科學的貢獻多有論述。這篇文章中的資料和分析可視作對他的論述的一個具體的補充。
每個科學家都希望自己的工作得到科學同仁的承認,他們往往在他們的科學報告中,論述自己工作的重要性。但最重要的客觀標準是他們的工作是否得到同行的認可。科學家的實際貢獻是可以用他的研究工作產生的影響(Impact)來衡量。科學論文的引用率 (Citation Index) 應該是衡量科學家影響一個客觀的標準。
我對十五位新一代知名的華裔科學家的代表性論文的引用率作了一個初步調查。所選擇的論文不包括綜述文章,僅僅是首發的研究論文 (RESEARCH PAPERS). 我相信我已盡了自己的最大努力,檢查了這些科學家的全部重要研究論文。下面給出的僅僅是他們的最重要的論文的引用率。如有遺漏,請諸位同仁補充。這些論文僅僅包括這些科學家在他們自己的實驗室發表的文章,不包括他們獨立以前在他們的導師的實驗室里發表的論文。 
這些資料來源於2004年6月1日進行的ISI Search. 具體請見下列(http://isi10.newisiknowledge.com/)

關於這些資料的一些說明。
1. 王曉東和袁鈞瑛的關於細胞凋亡的工作是第一流的,他們的論文產生了巨大的影響。特別是王曉東,他的四篇論文,引用率都在一千次以上。
2. 引用率在三百次以上的,一般說來是歷程碑Milestone 論文。共有四位華裔學者達此標準:他們是王曉凡,傅新元,魯白,和錢卓。他們的這些論文往往開創了一個新的研究領域。例如錢卓的關於聰敏老鼠的論文,是生物史上第一次人工改變智力。這篇論文被引用了312次。傅新元1992年的Cell 論文,第一次闡明STAT 信號通路的分子機理。魯白的1996 Nature 論文被引用310次。這篇論文首次指明神經細胞因子對記憶的影響。王曉凡的1995年的PNAS論文,被引用超過四百次。 在這篇論文中,王第一次報道細胞周期抑制因子p21可以被p53以外的TGF-beta所調控。
3. 引用率超過兩百次的論文大都是極為重要的經典的發現。例如鄧初夏關於BRCA1的發現,傅向東發現的調節mRNA 剪切的新型蛋白激酶。鄧興旺發現的COP 基因。管坤良關於Mek 蛋白激酶的研究,和施一公關於Smad蛋白結構的研究。
4. 引用率超過一百次的論文都是很優秀論文。例如饒毅關於Slit 基因在神經發育中的重要作用的一系列論文,許田關於TSC 基因的研究,施一公在結構生物學中的許多論文,和韓岷的關於RAS-RAF信號通路的研究。這些論文有的發表的時間還短,相信他們在今後幾年中的引用率會逐步上升。
5. 駱利群是近年來在神經領域出人頭地的一匹黑馬,作了極出色的工作。他的重要論文發表的時間還短,相信他工作的影響會越來越大。
6. 引用率的高低也受此領域的大小的影響。細胞凋亡領域是近年來影響最大的一個領域。Medline 檢索細胞凋亡Apoptosis 可找到超過八萬四千篇論文。這領域內有影響力的論文的引用率必然會相對的高。韓岷研究的線蟲的Ras-Raf 通路,領域較小,雖然他做了極優秀的工作,論文的引用率相對偏低是可以理解的。
7. 發表在三大雜誌:Cell, Nature, Science 上的論文一般引用率較高。但不是絕對的。不少三大雜誌的論文並沒有被廣泛引用。關鍵是論文的質量。例如王曉凡的數篇論文引用率很高,但都不是這三大雜誌的論文。
8. 值得注意的是,十五位中暫時領先的四位科學家,王曉東, 袁鈞瑛, 王曉凡和傅新元都是早期CUSBEA 項目的成員。傅向東,韓岷,管坤良,及黑馬駱利群也是其成員。
9. 雖然這些華裔學者已取得了引人注目的成就,但大多數人並沒有成為各領域中的當然的領袖或頂級權威。除了王曉東和袁俊瑛,大多數新一代華裔科學家仍有一段艱苦的路要走,才能成為各領域中的泰斗。
