    He knew that he was a spirit without a foyer

    And that, in his knowledge, local objects become

    More precious than the most precious objects of home:

    The local objects of a world without a foyer,

    Without a remembered past, a present past,

    Or a present future, hoped for in present hope,

    Objects not present as a matter of course

    On the dark side of the heavens or the bright,

    In the sphere with so few objects of its own.

    Little existed for him but the few things

    For which a fresh name always occurred, as if

    He wanted to make them, keep them from perishing,

    The few things, the objects of insight, the integrations

    Of feeling, the things that came of their own accord,

    Because he desired without knowing quite what,

    That were the moments of the classic, the beautiful.

    These were the serene he had always been approaching

    As toward an absolute foyer beyond romance.

            他知道自己沒有主心骨

            還發覺局部物品變得

            比家裡最珍貴的東西還要珍貴：

            遠離中心領域的局部物品，

            沒有記憶的過去，沒有現在的過去，

            或者現在的未來，現在的所盼所期，

            物品並非存在於

            天際間冥昭瞢闇，

            鮮有自身價值的範疇里。

            於他幾近空無除了

            名稱不斷翻新，仿佛

            他要刻意為之，以免蕩然無遺。

            重要事物、洞察對象、感性

            融合，理所當然的存在，

            因為他弄不清究竟渴望什麼，

            或許那才是經典、美麗的時刻。

            他始終追逐這種寧靜

            朝向超越浪漫的絕對中心。

【注】今年紐約大學的家長會依舊定在金秋十月最後一周，雖然身為紐約仔的兒子已上大三，但我還是提前一個月上網註冊，希望再度走進校園領略教育的真諦。哪曾想到，計劃趕不上變化，變化趕不上舊病復發！因為坐骨神經作梗，痛得我整個周末臥床不起，只好將紐約之行順延一周。既然錯過了家庭聚會，何不到弓橋(Manhattan Bridge)、美溪橋(Brooklyn B.)浪上一遭？秋冬之交正染上頭疼腦熱的紐約仔周一期中考試在即，於是我們相約下城小福州區的花園川菜館，午餐後橋頭堡下我們各奔東西。
