Men have the truth about the Creator, but they “hold the truth in unrighteousness” (v. 18), where the verb translated as “hold” (katechō) or “suppress” (ESV) means to seize, restrain, or hold back from making progress.53 They take hold of the truth, but use it for their own purposes rather than surrender to God. Sinners strive against the evidence all around them and in their own minds, lest they turn back to the Lord.
