Robert Shaw（1916-1999）有“合唱之神”的美譽，他在美國擁有超高的人氣。1945年受指揮大師托斯卡尼尼（Toscanini）之請，為他準備貝多芬第九號合唱交響曲的合唱團部，隨後備受高度倚重，多次與托氏在大都會歌劇院合作歌劇。之後Shaw又被指揮泰斗庫賽維茲基邀請與波士頓交響樂團合作，甚獲樂團肯定，乃被世界第一音樂學府茱莉亞音樂院聘為合唱團總監。在塞爾(Szell)領軍下，Shaw創立了克利夫蘭管弦樂團合唱團，同時名列克利夫蘭管弦樂團的指揮之一。Shaw是美國當代最偉大的合唱指揮家，他訓練的合唱團聲部均衡、音色和諧、表現力豐富，被譽為“美國浪漫合唱學派”的集大成者。他所指揮的合唱團演唱的聖樂合唱，音色明亮輝煌，氣勢壯麗磅薄，藝術表現深刻與震撼。因為美式合唱的自由度高，情感豐富，所以這些聖樂作品都有一種塵世之美，不懂宗教的人也能接受和欣賞。他們的歌唱藝術中表現出對平安、對愛和幸福懇切、熱烈的渴求深深打動人心。有人說音樂能夠淨化人心，真正崇高的音樂則能使人感受到上天照看人類力量，那股力量讓人感到溫暖、不再無助，聖樂更是如此。
